Relevant

Analysis information for

JESSUP families

  1. Jacob JESSOP with Rachael COOK can be demonstrated to have been in Dearborn, Indiana, USA in 1808, via Quaker Records via HINSHAW.

  2. Nearly all individuals whom are recorded in “Simeon JESSUP” probate have family roots that come through North Carolina, then Virginia and Pennsylvania, then into Indiana and Ohio, then later into Iowa.

  3. Many individuals whom are recorded in Simeon JESSUP probate can be demonstrated to have relatives who were of Quaker origin, many coming from the North Carolina area, many moving in the same pattern as the above.

  4. The names of WHITE, UPDEGRAFF, THORNBURG, THORNTON, and HILL, HIATT are prominent in the area for both Indiana, specifically Dearborn and Randolph Counties, in Indiana, and Ohio, specifically in Highland, OH, and in the Hendricks and Hamilton County, OH areas and many of these names also appear in the Probate Records for Simeon JESSUP..

  5. Many of these same names are later found in the Polk, Iowa region that Simeon later lived.

  6. The FISHER line is associated with Quakers, with Virginia, Indiana, and Iowa. John Fisher is known to have been one of the first settlers in Polk, Iowa.

  7. The PEARSON name, a home where a Doc JESSUP preached as part of the Campbell Reformation movement, is also found in the potential immediate family. Simeon is known to have been a minister of the gospel, as demonstrated on marriage certificates where he performed the ceremonies.

  8. James Hopper Gray, who married a HOWARD, (La Porte, Indiana), and who was the executor of Simeon’s estate, was also associated with the Campbell movement as part of the reformation. He appears to have been heavily involved in this, since some of his children’s names were Alpha and Omega, as well as others associated with Christianity.

  9. Dearborn, Indiana, where I first pick up Simeon, was associated with the White Water Monthly meeting, of Wayne County, Indiana, with an offset in Richmond, Indiana and was directly in the Quaker belt…an area near the White River Valley that was heavily settled by Quakers in the period between 1811 and 1820.

  10. There are three GRAY family members that marry into the JESSUP family. Nancy, Sarah and Sampson GRAY all married JESSUP family members.

  11. The name HILL is a part of the Probate Records for Simeon JESSUP, and there are at least two HILLs, Benjamin and Elizabeth Haskett HILL, that married into the JESSUP family, both of which are associated with the Randolph, or Wayne County, Indiana areas during the period between 1811 and 1832.

  12. James Brown HILL married Abigail JESSUP, in Dearborn, Indiana in 1822. I am unable to trace the correct Abigail directly to the Jacob JESSOP family in any way, but the coincidence is interesting. Simeon Jessup is likely to have been in Dearborn about the same time, as he also marries in 1821, to Lucy HALLADAY. The place of their marriage is unknown, however, the HALLADAY family, with known sisters and brothers of Lucy HALLADAY, are located in the Dearborn, Indiana area in 1820 and in 1830.

  13. The KNIGHT family, which is represented in the Probate Records of Simeon JESSUP, is also associated with the areas in North Carolina and Virginia where the Quaker JESSOPS come from.

  14. Jacob JESSUP, with his family was associated with the Ohio area as early as 1806.

  15. Timothy JESSUP, an older brother of Jacob, arrived in the Ohio area sometime between 1811 and 1821. (likely 1816 based upon land records).

  16. Thomas JESSUP, an older brother of Jacob, also was present in Ohio early, arriving in Highland, Ohio, in 1811.

  17. William JESSUP, another older brother of Jacob, arrived in Richmond, Wayne, Indiana, sometime after 1818. ( or just before.. date based on Disownment in North Carolina)

  18. Of these brothers, Timothy, the oldest brother that came south to Indiana, Ohio area, seems to have completed having children by 1789, nearly 11 years prior to Simeon’s birth. Thomas the third son (the eldest, Joseph, having stayed in North Carolina) also seems to have completed having children by 1787, and William, the fourth brother (third to come to Ohio) was not married until 1818, nearly 17 years after Simeon’s birth. Jacob, the youngest and last son, was married in 1775 and had his known children between 1785 and 1798.

  19. There are few records for Jacob JESSUP, other than while he was young. It does not appear that Jacob JESSUP was involved with the Quakers after a certain point, as there are no records of him after about 1812, until 1832 where he is known to have died in 1832 in Richmond, Wayne, Indiana. There are however, also few records available that I have found so far for Jacob even in the Federal Census and other typical sources.

  20. There are land records for several JESSUP/JESSOP men, many purchasing their land in either the 1816 timeframe or in 1833/4. These men are Jacob JESSUP and Jacob JESSUP Jr. Abraham JESSUP, Hezekiah JESSUP, Isaac JESSUP, Jonathan JESSUP, Asa JESSUP, Walter JESSUP, Eli JESSUP David JESSUP, William JESSOP, Nathan JESSOP, and Timothy JESSOP. Of the above, only Walter and Ezra (Walter’s son) JESSUP cannot be tied to the North Carolina branch. All of these purchases appear to be in the Dearborn, Indiana, Randolph, Indiana, Wayne, Indiana, or Switzerland, Indiana counties. There seem to be two waves of purchases…one between 1812 and 1817, and the other between 1834 and 1837. The Quakers are known to have begun settling the White River valley in the 1812’s and throughout the next decade.

  21. Four of the above sets of land purchases appear to have been the four brothers earlier mentioned.

  22. All except Walter and Ezra are potentially descendants of Thomas JESSOP born 1715.

  23. Several additional names found in the censuses living near Simeon in Polk, Iowa, seem to have associations with the Quaker population. These are White, Elliot, Gray, Brown, Porter, Hiatt. All of the above surnames except Gray are also associated with North Carolina.

  24. Huldah JESSOP, daughter of Thomas JESSOP b. 1775, and related to Jacob, Timothy and William JESSOP appears to have been born in New Jersey, in 1812. Thomas JESSUP b. 1775 was the son of Thomas JESSOP, b. 1746, son of Thomas JESSOP b. 1715. All are descendants of Thomas b. 1715.

  25. Joseph JESSOP, oldest son of Thomas born 1715, had children who had their own children in the 1780s and 1790s. Joseph himself did not come to Indiana, but several of his children appear to have migrated in the early 1800s to Ohio and Indiana. Of these male children, only John and Caleb JESSUP, born 1773 and 1778 respectively, would both have been old enough to be the parent of Simeon. Caleb had a daughter born in 1801, unknown month, it is possible that Simeon would have been a twin. There is no easily accessible information about John, son of Joseph, so it is potentially possible that John would be Simeon’s father.

  26. Timothy JESSOP had sons who came to Indiana, Ohio area as well. These were Pratt Wilton, Timothy H, and Samuel. Of these only Pratt Wilton JESSOP was married and having children during the right time frame. Pratt is potentially a father for Simeon, as he was in the Indiana area by 1802. However, Pratt appears in Quaker records after 1801, and no Simeon is listed with his family, no unknown children, and no children born in 1801 to all appearances.

  27. Thomas JESSOP b. 1746 had sons who came to the Indiana area as well. These were Thomas b. 1775, Nathaniel b. 1785, Isaac b. 1783 and Timothy b. 1781. Of these Thomas, b. 1775, is a potential parent, having been married in 1798 and with an “open” birth slot in the 1801 timeframe. It should be mentioned that one of Thomas’ daughters, Huldah JESSOP, b. 1812 is the only child in the NC JESSOP line (other than Simeon?) who is known to have been born in New Jersey. Thomas also appears to have been in Clinton, Ohio, by 1811. For Timothy, the second son of Thomas who came to the Indiana area, there is little information, though records suggest that he was married in 1804, after Simeon’s birth. Nathaniel JESSOP was married to Sarah GRAY in 1805, 4 years after Simeon’s birth, however it is notable that the GRAY family seems to have been prominent in Simeon’s life. Isaac JESSOP, b. 1783 was also married to a GRAY, (Ann GRAY), in 1813, several years after Simeon’s birth.

  28. Of Caleb JESSOP’s sons, (b. 1750), the only son who is known to have come to Indiana area is John H JESSOP, who would have been too young to be Simeon’s likely father (16 yrs).

  29. William JESSOP, b. 1752, had several sons who came to the Indiana area early in the 1800’s. These are William, b. 1772, Timothy b. 1777, Josiah, b. 1779, Hezekiah b. 1794. It is possible that another son, Burden JESSOP, b. 1785 came to Indiana as well. Other sons of William JESSOP b. 1752 were either too young to have been Simeon’s father or stayed in North Carolina. William b. 1772, was married to Ruth Thornburgh in 1797, and began having his children in the early 1800’s. William is potentially a father for Simeon as well, though he does appear in Quaker records after 1801, with no mention of Simeon. Timothy, b. 1777, was married in 1799 and is known to have had a child (Unknown gender) that was born in May of 1801 and died in 1801 as well. Therefore, it is unlikely that Timothy is the father of Simeon. Also, all of Timothy’s children seem to have been born in North Carolina. Josiah, b. 1779, was married in 1804, three years after Simeon’s birth. Hezekiah b. 1794 was too young to be a parent in 1801. Borden was not married until 1813.

  30. Jacob JESSOP, b. 1754, had several sons who came to the Indiana area as well. His first born was Joseph, b. 1777. He had a daughter who was born in Feb of 1801. While it is possible that Joseph could be Simeon’s father, it is highly unlikely, as there are only 8 months between Feb and Oct. when Simeon was born. Abraham, b. 1780, appears to have remained unmarried until 1811. Isaac b. 1783, does not appear to have married until 1813, though there is a “lost child” attached to his name in my unverified records, named Elizabeth, born 1806. It is a possibility that Isaac was Simeon’s father by an earlier marriage, though it does not appear so at present. Other son’s of Jacob were too young to have had a child in 1801.
