Avery I. Barnes

Avery I. Barnes, one of the pioneers of LaPorte county, coming to this county in 1839 from Onondago county, N. Y., passed away Saturday night at his home in Galena township at the age of 96 years. The pioneer died at the home of Wheeler Meyers, at the old home, his place of residence since 1858 when he was married to Miss Celestine Wilcox, who passed to her reward April 20, 1899.

Mr. Barnes had the distinction of being a resident of Galena township, one of its prosperous farmers, all but nine years of his life, and probably no man in LaPorte county was more familiar with its history or that of LaPorte county than the deceased. During his life Mr. Barnes filled a number of positions of public trust. He was for many years a member of the Christian church. He was a brother of the late Mrs. E. W. Davis, wife of Hon. E. W. Davis, while a surviving brother, Dr. C. G. Barnes, is a resident of Albion, Nebraska-LaPorte Ex.

Deaths' Call Comes to One of Pioneer Women of LaPorte County, Indiana

To have lived to the age of four score years and three, to have been the devoted life companiion for years of the husband who in time's deepening shadows mourns as she sleeps, was the Master's legacy of life to Mrs. Betsy Barnes Davis, wife of Hon. E. W. Davis, who passed away Saturday evening, December 21, at the old home place in Galena township, the old home place rich in its memories of the unforgotten years. Another poineer woman has been called from the busy scenes of life to the bourne to which the boatsman finds his was in the mystery of death. To her who is asleep there has come the dawn of the eternal morning, the joyous awakening, while here will bloom the flowers of love which she nurtured, with tears to memory given as night's gloomy waters flow to the mysterious sea, and hope's smiles dispel the gathering shadows.

The Master's eternal plan of fullness of years and the beauty thereof came to Mrs. Davis, who was born in Onondago county, N. Y. January 30, 1835, the daughter of Cyrus and Eliza Barnes. She came to LaPorte county with her parents in 1839, living in Galena township all the following years, a period of time in which history was written, in which life was moulded, in which girlhood budded into womanhood. On the 9th of October. 1853, Betsy Barnes became the wife of Mr. Davis and the present home was established, and here life unfolded its petals like the morning flower and days were forged into the lengthening chain of years.

Two children, a son and a daughter, were born to bless the happy union. The son, Arthur C. Davis, died January 22, 1896. The daughter, Mrs. Fannie Cadwallader of Salem, Ohio, survives with the widowed husband to look back over the years which memory has sweetened and to behold the holy peace that comes streaming through the gateway of the dawn as the fading visions close. Of the immediate members of Mrs. Davis family there are survivors in two brothers, Avery I. Barnes, more than 90 years of age, a resident of Galena township, and Dr. C. G. Barnes of Albion, Nebraska. There are twenty great grandchildren and eleven grandchildren to call her blessed as the embers glow and memories around her throng.

Mrs. Davis' life was one in which love and devotion were the dominans forces. Her tender ministratins dispelled the shadows which came as the days glided into years. Of her the poet could have written:

"A heart, which, like a fine-toned lute,

With every breath of feeling woke

And, even when the tongue was mute,

From eye and lip in music spoke."

Her life was that of the home where unobtrusive goodness shone. October 9th last witnessed the 65th wedding anniversary of the couple, a day when whisperings of the silent past brought memories of long departed joys. Each recurring anniversary day brought the flowers of love and remembrance to the patriarchal couple and thus life had its sunshine, though the years were hastening the coming transition.

Mrs. Davis loved nature, the bud, the flower, the plant, all the handiwork of the Creator. She found keen delight in their cultivation. She reveled in their beauty and they inspired many bits of verse which revealed a love of th beautiful as well as that of the intellectual. As she loved the flower and the waving grain, the tree and the plant, the same love found frution in cherished friendships, and thus to her were given the sage's precept and the poet's song.

Mrs. Davis has been in failing health for a number of years, but she was uncomplaining, carrying her burden as would the Master, looking to that day when the morning of the eternal day would blossom out of the night, when the death angel would beckon. The end came suddenly, though not unexpectedly to the family, the nature of her disease warning of the coming hour. Looking back over the years it can be said of her life as the poet wrote:

"Long may such goodness live

'Twas all she gave-'twas

All she had to give."

Thus ends the day of this gentle life for the night has come and with its passing has dawned the eternal morn and around her path has come a stream of living light.

In her religious life Mrs. Davis was a member of the Christian church, with which she had affiliated from the days of her girlhod, fnding the assurance of the eternal life in the beauty of its teachings, the promise of the reuniting where the day is never ending.

The funeral services were conducting at the old home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Mr. Stamper, pastor of the Christian church, officiated and burial took place at Pine Lake cemetery under the direction of Cutler Bros.

Mrs. Davis will be greatly missed by her many Three Oaks friends. The sympathy of the community is extended to the grieving husband and family.

BIOGRAPHY:

1880 History of LaPorte County, Chapman, Page 700

Eugene W. Davis was born in Monongahela county, W. Va., Dec. 20, 1832. His father, Caleb, and his mother, Sarah (Wagner) Davis, were also natives of Virginia, the former of English and the latter of German descent, who came to this county in 1831, first, looking at the country, and in 1833 moved and settled on the Phineas Hunt place, in Kankakee tp., where they resided until about 1835, when they moved to Springfield tp., and built a saw-mill on sec. 25. In 1838 they came to this tp. and settled on sec. 30, where they resided until 1879, when they moved to Shelby, Mich., at which place they now reside. Father Davis is widely known throughout this county, having preached the gospel for many years, without taking pay for his services. He labored without money or price, doing great good to his fellow man. He occasionally preaches where he now resides. Eugene was reared on the farm, and received a limited education, though at present he is a well-read man, getting his knowledge by his own personal efforts since he became of age. He has at present one of the best private libraries in the township, if not in the county. He commenced in life without a cent. He earned his first $100 by cutting cord wood at 40 cents per cord, gaining little by little, until now he is the owner of 200 acres of well-improved land. He resides on sec. 29. He married Miss B.A. Barnes Oct. 9, 1853: she is the daughter of Cyrus Barnes, who is also an old settler. Miss B. was born in New York in 1835. They have had 3 children, 2 of whom are living; Arthur C. and Frances E. (now Mrs. Finley.) In addition to his large library Mr. Davis has also a very fine collection of geological specimens, which attracts the admiration of all visitors. P.O., Hatch's Mills.

Eugenius Davis Passes Away

Resident of Galena Township For 91 Years. Well Known In Three Oaks.

Eugenius W. Davis, 92 years old, ex-president of the LaPorte Savings bank and prominent retired farmer of Galena township, died at his home at 3 A. M. today after an illness of only two hours.

Neuralgia of the heart was the cause of Mr. Davis' death, Dr. O. L. Sutherland, his physician, said.

Mr. Davis, who played a prominent part in the life and development of LaPorte County, became president of the bank in February, 1915, upon the death of James H. Buck. Until May 1919, he served as head of the institution, retiring at that time and returning to his farm in Galena Township.

He was connected with the bank for 38 years and was the oldest continuous resident of the county, having come here from West Virginia at the age of 1 year.

Funeral Saturday

Funeral services for Mr. Davis will be held at the home at 11 A. M. Saturday. The ministers in charge probably will be the Rev. M. G. Long of LaPorte and Rev. J. F. Bellville of Rolling Prairie. Burial will be at Pine Lake Cemetery.

Mr. Davis was born in Monongalia County, West Virginia, on December 26, 1832. His paternal grandfather, John Davis, was likewise a native of West Virginia and a farmer. Caleb B. Davis, father of the deceased man, came to LaPorte on horseback.

Went To Log School

Mr. Davis' education was acquired in a log schoolhouse, and he was only able to attend school through the winter months, for in the summer seasons he assisted his father in clearing the land and improving the home farm.

He was thus engaged until he became 17 when, having formed a strong desire to enjoy better education privileges. He began educating himself through reading and study at home. He became qualified for teaching and for several years following the profession.

When he started out for himself he bought 80 acres in Galena Township for which he incurred an indebtedness of $700. He had no teams, there were no buildings on the place, or orchard and no tools of any description.

He left his father's house at noon on a May day in 1854, and cut every log used in building his first cabin that afternoon.

He always carried on agriculture until his retirement. Early in life he practiced economy, industry, and perseverance, and these sterling traits of character enabled him to advance steadily upon the road of prosperity. As the time of his death he owned several hundred acres in Galena Township.

Was State Sentor

Mr. Davis was always known as a Democrat and in 1881 he was elected to the state legislature and re-elected to the state legislature in the upper house. To every question which came up for settlement he gave his careful and earnest consideration, and his was a loyal support to all measures which he believed would contribute to the general good.

He also filled some local offices, including that of Justice of the Peace, and he was always recognized as a prominent and valued citizen of his community. By some he was called "the grand old man of LaPorte County."

Sine 1865 he had been a prominent Mason and at the time of his death held membership in Excelsior Lodge No. 41, F. & A. M., of LaPorte, and filled every chair except that of tyler. A member and elder of the Christian Church, he was a regular attendant and teacher in the Sunday School for many years.

On October 9, 1853 he married Miss Betsey Barnes. She passed away on December 21, 1919. He married the present Mrs. Davis on October 25, 1921. She survives with one daughter Fannie Cadwallader, 11 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

Othie Way, president of the LaPorte Savings bank, who succeeded Mr. Davis, said that he was a man of firm judgement and that many persons sought opnions from him. -The LaPorte Daily Herald-Argus, April 22, 1925.

OBITUARY:

(publication unknown)

Word was received here today of the death in Madison, Neb., of Dr. Cass G. Barns, native of LaPorte county, a former LaPorte doctor, and later a prominent Nebraska newspaperman, banker, business man and author.

Knowledge of the man's death was received by Mrs. Arthur West, 806 Tyler street, a niece of the widow of Dr. Barns.

Dr. Barns passed away Sunday, Sept. 11, after an illness of a few days with a complication of diseases. Had he lived until Oct. 1, he would have been 84 years old.

Dr. Barns was born in Galena township, this county, on Oct. 1, 1848. He was reared in the county and on June 25, 1871, married Isabella Smith. His wife was a sister of William T. Smith, now deceased, a prominent LaPorte man.

During the early part of his life he taught school, and later studied medicine, first under a preceptor and then in a Cincinnati, O., medical college, graduating in 1871.He also attended the University of Michigan college of medicine at Ann Arbor.

He practiced medicine in LaPorte until 1881 and served for several years as county physician.

In 1881, Dr. Barns and his family moved to Boone county, Neb. For five years they lived on a farm south of Albion, Neb., and in the spring of 1886, moved to Albion. After conducting a drug store in partnership with Dr. D. A. Lewis. Dr. Barns, on April 1, 1884, bought the Boone County Argus, of which he was editor many years. He sold the paper and retired from active practice.

On April 1, 1894, he was appointed postmaster at Albion in President Cleveland's administration, and held that capacity four years.

Dr. Barns was the author of "The Sod House," and authentic history of pioneer life in Nebraska, and a copy of which he sent to the LaPorte Public Library a few years ago. He had in manuscript form "Avery Snow, Hoosier," a story of Indiana forest settlers.

Dr. Barns was the last living member of the board of directors which organized the First National Bank of Albion and was its vice president when he moved to Madison.

OBITUARY:

LaPorte Daily Herald, LaPorte, IN, Jan. 31, 1896

At Rest

"He sleepeth." "There is no Death."

Arthur C., only son of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Davis, was born Dec. 30, 1854, on the farm where his parents now reside in Galena township, LaPorte Co., Ind., and was married to Miss Hannah D. Maas, Jan. 1, 1881, and passed from earth life Jan. 23, 1896. His funeral was held at the Christian church, Saturday forenoon, Rev. Grow of the Disciple church officiating, and he was laid to rest in the Foster cemetery. The pall bearers were, Miller Heckman, A. A. Heckman, F. Heckman, Frank Smith, Edward Etherington and Mr. Wilson.

Deceased was assisting in cutting wood with a buzz saw when the drivewheel burst, sending a missile weighing fifteen pounds through the lower portion of his body. He had the best possible attention, but the physician said at once that nothing could be done to save his life. He only survived about twelve hours. He was conscious unto the end, and it was remarkable with what calm resignation and Christian fortitude he bore it all, talking with his loved ones and admonishing his children to do right and be helpful to their mother. Mr. Davis leaves four bright children, three sons and one daughter, the eldest a son about thirteen years of age and the youngest a son four years old. Arthur was reared and educated here and he possessed a rare moral character. He was a member of the Disciple church and lived a modest unassuming Christian life, was a kind and affectionate father and husband, and it is said of him that he never spoke an unkind word to his wife. He will be missed in his home, in the church and in the Sunday school where he was a faithful worker and principal singer. For the closing hymn Sunday, Jan. 19, he sang: "God be with us till we meet again."

A large concourse of people gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed and to show their sympathy for the mourning for the mourning friends. But so let us speak of his departure as though going to sleep with a brighter awakening, as only a curtain separating us from the summer land of Life.

"There is no death. The voice whose joyous tones

Made glad the scene of sin and strife,

Sings now the everlasting song

Amid the Tree of Life."
