Cole, Harry Edwin - Harry Edwin Cole son of J. W. and Elma C.
Cole died Wednesday night at 12 o'clock, aged 12 years, 1 month, and 2 days.
Deceased was born in Westville and lived here until about three years ago, when
he moved with his parents to Chicago Heights, and only returned to the place of
his birth a few months ago. His playmates and all who knew him will cherish the
memory of his kind and gentle disposition. He was aware of the approaching end
and resignedly awaited the death angel to guide him to that unknown beyond. The
funeral was held Saturday at 10:30 from the M.E. church, Rev. Dunklebarger,
officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the Westville cemetery.
**Additional notes: Harry Edwin Cole, son of John W and Elma Cole, grandson of
Henry and Abby Cole. According to the 1900 census, he was born in May of 1890,
so he must have died about June of 1902.

Concannon, Mrs. Sarah - Obituary appeared in an 1867 newspaper.
Thank you to Steve Austin for donating this obituary found in his old family
bible. - Mrs. Sarah Concannon died at her residence in LaPorte County, Ind.,
January 1867 of Dropsy, Mrs. Sarah, wife of James Concannon. Mrs. Concannon was
born in McMinn County, Tennessee, April 14th, 1808, emigrated with her parents
to the State of Ohio, in 1812, united with the Christian Church in 1823 at the
early age of 15 of which body she was a devoted member during the remainder of
her life. She was married in 1825 and removed with her husband to LaFayette,
Ind., in (year missing); In 1848 to this county where she resided until the
time of her disease. An invalid for thirteen years, she bore her sufferings
with Christian fortitude and died triumphant, testifying in the last hours of
her unclouded life, hope for the Saviour, astonishing her stricken husband and
children to meet her in heaven where sickness, death and parting are no more.
poem as follows:
What is home without a
mother?
What are all the joys we meet?
When her loving
smile no longer
Greets the coming of our feet.
The days
are long the nights are dreary,
And time rolls slowly
on;
And Oh! how far are childhoods pleasure
When her
gentle care is gone.

Pedro or Petro, Sarah (Cole) - Further investigation resulted in
my finding her death date as 9 Nov 1903 in Logansport, Cass, IN. She had been
in the asylum there.
The Old Settlers of this community attended the last
sad rites of Mrs. Sarah Pedro, who died at the asylum at Logansport, IN, last
week, and the remains were brought to the home of her brother Henry P. Cole at
Westville, where the funeral services were held Thursday by Rev. Smock, the
resident minister of that place. The house was crowded while many stood out of
doors. Her sudden death was a surprise to the community. It was a sad funeral.
One could not realize to look at that troubled care-worn face that it was the
same bright, cheerful, hopeful young lady that was born in the beautiful farm
home Van Wilkin- son now owns. Her parents being well-to-do pioneers of this
county raised her in luxury without a care. Her first husband, Daniel Jessup,
was married to her the same day Mr. J's sister, Calista Jessup, was married to
Oscar James Bruner.
[**1] All have crossed the dark valley except Mr. J.,
who lives in Iowa near his three daughters, Laura, Clara, and Edith. Albert,
the only child of the second
[**2] union has been with Dr. Hollenbeck for
several years, and is a graduate from the Westville High School. Two children
of the last are Harry Pedro, a rising young man and a member of the church,
living at Chicago Heights, and Della, whom her great-uncle, W. Rich, a wealthy
farmer who lives near Chesterton, took to raise when her mother went away. This
is the first death in the family of children and Mrs. Pedro was the youngest at
56 years old. All live in this county except Elsworth, who formerly owned the
H. Martin farm, but now lives in Republic, Ohio, Henry P. Cole at Westville,
Mrs. Eliza Baird and Albert Cole near Dewey. Mrs. Pedro was laid to rest in the
Westville cemetery. Mr. Bunda, Andrew Young, Mr. Hilton, David McKellips,
Daniel Hubbard and Charley Cole acted as pallbearers. ** Additional notes from
Linda Jones - I have found in the 1880 census for New Durham Twp a listing for
Sarah C. and Sam'l W. Conquist and her daughter Eda M. Jessup. So this blows
away the assumption that Sarah was only married twice. Albert listed in the
obit is the son of Sam'l [Samuel] Conquist, Sarah's second husband.
**1 My
cousin noted that "according to the Marriage Records, Daniel and Sarah were
married the same day as Daniel's sister Mary to Roland Stone."
**2 He also
notes that the "wording is confusing. I believe this should read first
marriage."
