Wills Township Baptist Cemetery AKA The Old Baptist Cemetery is a last resting place for many of the areas inhabitants. Wills Cemetery is located on 350N between 500E and 600E in Wills Township, La Porte County, Indiana.
On June 13, 1836 at the home of James Hunt, Elder T. Price of Edwardsburg, Michigan, and Elder T. Spaulding of La Porte organized a Baptist Church. Some of the members were: John Salisbury, Mathias Dawson, Nancy Hunt, Clarissa Canada, Martha Hunt, Catherine Whitehead, Sara Mason, Phebe Hunt, Sabrina Salisbary, Alice Dawson, Martha Whitehead and James Hunt. In 1837 a Baptist Church was erected in the southeast corner of Section 13. The building was made of logs and the warrantee deed shows that George Belshaw conveyed the land to the trustees of the organization. The log building was used until 1843 when it was razed and a new frame building was erected near the site of the original one. The frame building housing the church no longer exists. The oldest known burial in this cemetery is: Lavina Stoner who d. July 26, 1837.
In the early days when sickness was so widely spread and accidents were common a burying ground was needed and a tract of land was acquired for that purpose. The section in front of the main gate was the original Baptist cemetery. In 1837 a section west of the original one was opened by David Stoner. The east side of the original section was opened about 1900 and is called the "New Addition", though another section was opened by Burl and Ethel Stoner in 1907. The cemetery has their own association and is still open for burials.

Clara R. Hunt: Source: Daily Herald - Friday, March 11, 1898
Clara R. Hunt, daughter of Jeptha and Christina Hunt, was born near Rolling
Prairie, ths county, Nov. 5, 1881 and died Mar 1, 1898, aged 16 years, 8 months
and 24 days.
She was a victim of tuberculosis of the
lungs. Young, energetic, ambitious, Clara fought the disease bravely and
uncomplainingly and not until the school that she had been a regular attendant,
closed in December for a short vacation did she realize that she must give up
the unequal contest.
Clara was loveable. She was good and true.
Although desirous of living that she might become a useful woman, she met her
fate calmly and with perfect resignation. She was willing and not afraid to
meet her Saviour.
Tenderly she kissed her loved
ones good bye and bade them a found farewell.
She
leaves a father, mother, one sister and three brothers, besides a hot of
friends to mourn for her.
The funeral services were
held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Baptist church, Rolling Prairie, Rev G. B.
VanArsdall, of the New Carlisle Church of Christ,
officiating.
He spoke from the text that Clara had
selected. "Let not your heart be troubled:"

favorite hymns were sung and her favorite school mates carried her to her last
resting place to the cemetery near the church.

One death, that of a three-year-old daughter, took place Sunday, and yesterday another child succumbed to the dread disease. The health authorities are maintaining quarantine measures which will not be relaxed until all danger of the disease spreading have been obviated. Raven, - Kenneth James Raven Local Youth Dies in First Tragedy of
Year at Beach ____________________________________________________________
Kenneth James Raven Dives in Shallow Water and Breaks His Neck

Complications Cause Death This Morning

Body is Paralyzed and Bronchial Pneumonia Sets In; Was Nearly 20

Funeral Services to be Held Sunday P.M.

Kenneth James Raven, son of Mr. And Mrs. James Raven of 315 I street, who
suffered a broken neck when he dived into three feet of water at the municipal
beach on Stone lake yesterday afternoon passed away at 2:20 a.m. today. The
youth would have observed his 20th birthday anniversary on Aug. 10. His death
was the first tragedy of the season at the city beach. Complications, in
addition to the broken vertebrae of the neck, brought about the young man's
death. The injury to his neck paralyzed his entire body and bronchial pneumonia
developed last night, brought on by the fact that his lungs had been filled
with water. Although pneumonia was believed to have actually caused death early
this morning, it is certain the other injury also would have been fatal. At the
time of the accident, according to Dr. G. O. Larson, who attended him, he had
almost drowned.
Dives in Shallow Water The accident that led to
Kenneth's death happened about 3:30 p. m. yesterday. The youth was swimming
with some friends, and he decided to dive from the pier and plunge through an
inflated inner tube floating on the water. The water, according to witnesses,
is only three feet deep at that point. As he plunged through the tube his head
struck the bottom of the lake. After a lapse of several seconds, the friends
who had watched him, another young man and a girl, saw his body rise to the
surface, but his head remained under water. They became alarmed and lifted him
entirely out of the water and carried him to the beach. Ronald Cummings, city
life guard, immediately started artificial respiration, and a doctor and an
ambulance were summoned, as well as police. After Cummings had continued
artificial respiration for about a half hour, Kenneth regained consciousness.
He was removed to his home in the O. M. Haverstock ambulance. His condition
became worse during the evening. With his body paralyzed, he never recovered
from the effects of the water in his lungs.
Former Paper Carrier -
Kenneth was born in La Porte on Aug. 10, 1911, and had lived here all his life.
