A Few Researched Burials

Rev. James Armstrong, Methodist minister, served as a circuit rider first at the Deer Creek Circuit in Pickaway County, OH. "That same year (1821) James Armstrong had recently come as a Local Preacher from Baltimaore to Indiana and was an able and laborious man and eminently successful, in winning souls to Christ, and proved a most valuable acquisition to our feeble Itinerant corps." (Calvin Ruters Brief Sketch of His Life & Itinerant Labors at DePauw.edu archives). Rev. Armstrong then served the Greencastle, IN circuit from 1825 to 1826, then to the Charleston Indiana Circuit on August 25, 1825 when he lived in Lanesville, IN, and lastly to the Northwest Indiana District in 1833 where Rev. Ruters stated, "blest with the gift of Exhortation, and was generally very sucessful, in the various fields of labour to which he was appointed, on hearing of his death, then immediately made arrangements to go out and visited his bereaved family, and while there preached his funeral in the church at the door Village to a numerous & deeply affected congregation. Lastly, according to "Abstracts of Obituaries in the Western Christian Advocate of 1834-1850" compiled for the Indiana Historical Society of Indianapolis in 1988, it states: "Rev. James Armstrong b: Ireland; d: 9-12-1834 in St Joseph Co, IN or LaPorte, IN. Family to Philadelphia, PA, when James was a child; James later in Baltimore. Buried in Northern IN. (2-4; May 1, 1835 and also 1-87; 9-27-1834. I hope this helps build a history of a man who served the Methodist faith all throughout the midwest. These tireless servants asked for little but an audience while traveling thousands of miles to spread the word of God. My ancestor, Rev. John Mercer (1785-1856), of Putnamville, IN named his son, born 1825, after Rev. Armstrong. There are many wonderful anecdotal stories of Rev. James Armstrong found in Rev. Calvin Ruters papers located online at Contributed by: Pat Mercer Hite, Indy

Brayton, Gideon Fally - Obituary - page one - LAPORTE ARGUS BULLETIN - JULY 14, 1910
LA PORTE INDIANA
PIONEER PASTOR PASSES AWAY IN CARTHAGE, MO. Rev. Gideon F. Brayton Dies at an Advanced Age of 88 Years at Home of His Daughter.
Rev. Gideon F. Brayton, for many years a resident of LaPorte County, also the scene of ministerial labors, died yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. David Miller, of Carthage, MO. The remains will be brought to this city tomorrow evening, reaching here at 6:48 PM. The funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the First Baptist Church, with Rev. Clarke R. Parker officiating. The interment will be at the Door Village cemetery. Weir & Seivert are in charge.
Rev. Brayton also leaves a daughter, Mrs. Sophia Teeter,** who resides at Coloma, Mich. Rev. Mr. Brayton was ordained to the Baptist ministry at Door Village in 1878. He immediately assumed charge of the Rolling Prairie church. From there he moved to Charles City, Ia., where he organized eight churches in that vicinity under the Baptist Home Mission board. He founded what is now a large and flourishing church in Osage, Ia. Mr. Brayton was also a veteran of the Civil War, entering the army as chaplain of the 9th Illinois Cavalry, and serving during '63 and '64. Retiring from army life he accepted a call to the Baptist church at Kendallville, Ind., and this pastorate was followed by years spent in Cape Geraradu, Charlestown, and Carthage, Mo. At that time the health of Mr. Brayton began to fail, and removing from Missouri be accepted a call from the Antioch, Ill., church, remaining for a periiod of five years. Continued ill health compelled him to retire from his active ministerial labors and at Reynolds, Ill., Mr. Brayton rented a hotel which he successfully conducted for several years, afterwards continuing in the same business in Coloma, Mich. While there he received a call from his home church in Door Village and returned there. He later filled pastorates at Valparaiso, Wheeler and Crown Point. His final pastorate was in Door Village.
The venerable clergyman devoutly believed that marriage was not a failure, and his married life was one of more than passing interest. When but a youth of 18 years he was married to Miss Amelia Crane. For twenty years they lived happily together, when death called during their residence in Valparaiso. Six children were born to them, four of whom survive. In 1860 Mr. Brayton took unto himself a second wife, Mrs. Cornelia F. Brown, with whom he lived for forty years. She, too, was called away some time ago, and the companion of her life was left alone. But to him who keeps young in heart love never grows old and in his third marriage, Mr. Brayton secured a companion for his last years in Mrs. Cole, of this city, one who shared his lot in passing down the shady side of life's hill. Mrs. Brayton died several years ago. **Correction - Mrs. Mary Caroline Teeter.

"PASSING AWAY OF MRS. ABBY COLE"  - Mrs. Abby Cole, aged 80 years, formerly a resident of Westville, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harry Calbetzer in Elkhart last Wednesday afternoon, March 11th, death being caused by a complication of ailments. Funeral services were held at Door Village Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock, Rev. E. T. Scott, of Westville officiating. Abby McKellips was born in New Durham township, LaPorte county, April 4th 1844. She would have been 81 years old this coming month. She was the youngest of eight children of David and Lydia McKellips and was the last one of the children to survive. She grew to womanhood and had passed her entire life in this vicinity. In early life she was united in marriage to Henry P. Cole, who preceeded her in death seven years ago. To this union eight children were born, five of whom are still living. Eddie and Sadie passed away in infancy, and John W., at the age of 59 years. Those of the children who survive their mother are: Mrs. Etta Hubbard, of Whiting, Ind.; Mrs. Lydia Holtz and Mrs. Edna Calbetzer of Elkhart, Ind.; Mrs. Mary Forrester, of Niles, Mich.; and Frank L., of Chicago Heights, Ill. The deceased is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Cole, Henry P - Henry P. Cole was born in New Durham township, LaPorte county, May 23, 1841, and passed away at his home in this place Jan. 23, 1918, aged 76 years 8 months. He was the youngest son of John W. and Eliza A. Cole, early pioneers of this county. He leaves a wife, six children, thirteen grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren, one brother, Albert W. Cole, and one sister, Mrs. Eliza Ann Baird, to mourn his loss. The funeral was held from the home Friday at 10:30, E.T. Scott conducting services which proved a kindly tribute to the memory of the deceased as well as a consolation to relatives and friends. Burial was in the cemetary at Door Village, where many of the fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters of this and other generations are gathered. Henry Cole was a kind neighbor, ever ready to assist in the care of the sick. Until the calamity which deprived him of his eyesight he was not only a familiar figure at the bedside of the sick and dying, but he was generally sought for in such capacity. To be worthy of this office invests the occupant with a certain distinction and builds around him tender memories. Many homes in this locality have known his ministrations. Mr. Cole came to be recognized as an authority in this locality in the practice of veterinary medicine. He bore the affliction of his later years with patience. Surviving him besides the widow are two sons, John and Frank, of Chicago Heights; and four daughters, Mrs. Etta Hubbard, of Robertsdale; Mrs. Lydia Holtz, of Elkhart; Mrs. Mary Forrester, of Cicero, Ill., and Mrs. Edna Calbetzer, of Flint, Mich.

Cole, John Alsworth - John Alworth Cole (8 Sep 1835-20 Feb 1914) is the son of John W. Cole and Eliza A. Payne, both of whom are buried in Door Village Cemetery (Block 3, East Side, Old Ground) The father, John W. was selected to serve on the very first Grand Jury of LaPorte County. John Alworth was one of the original organizers of the LaPorte County Old Settlers Association.
He married Harriet A. Palmer, who I believe was the daughter of Solomon L. Palmer and Candace Jane Shedd, also both Early Settlers of LaPorte County. From the 19 Feb 1914 edition of Michigan City's "Evening News" page 8, column 4 J. A. Cole -- The body of J. A. Cole of Republic, Ohio, was buried Wednesday in Door Village. He is survived by a son, P. J. Cole of South Bend, one daughter, Mrs. B. H. Fleming, of South Bend; two brothers, Albert Cole of Durham, and Henry Cole of Westville, and one sister, Mrs. Eliza Baird of Durham.
I found the marriage of John Alworth Cole's parents in the db at Indiana State Library "Marriages through 1850" as occuring on 6 Apr 1834. I have copies of the census image from New Durham Twp for 1850 placing him in this family, for 1860 placing him and his wife living just next door to his mother and siblings on one side, his in-laws on the other side. The 1870 census image shows him still living next to his in-laws, but his widowed mother has gone to live with Philander and Eliza Baird [see Baird entry below.] I have the 1850 census image placing John Alworth Cole's wife Harriet with her birth family, Solomon and Candace Palmer.
From the 23 Feb 1914 edition of Michigan City's "Evening News" page 4, column 4 John A. Cole -- The body of John Alworth Cole, a lifelong resident of New Durham township was buried last Thursday at Alida. Mr. Cole spent the last ten years of his life in Tiffin, Oh., where he died Feb. 16. He is survived by two children, T. J. Cole of Chicago, and Mrs. B. H. Fleming of South Bend. He was familiarly known as "Bub" Cole and at one time owned the fine farm now owned and occupied by H. H. Martin near Westville. The two above obituaries have many errors, but it is obvious that this is the same man. - Additional note from Linda: Eliza Ann Cole Baird (24 Jan 1838 - 9 Apr 1922) the wife of Philander Baird, was the daughter of John W. Cole and Eliza A. Payne, and was sister to John Alworth Cole [above.] Eliza Ann and Philander Baird married 14 Nov 1858. - Informant Linda Jones - see our donations page for email address.

Cole, Walter C - Yesterday morning, Walter C. Cole ??? Walter Cole visited here ??? and apparently he was in his usual robust health and merry spirits. He came to accompany Ezra Geist to Philadelphia for a visit with his son, C. H. Geist. When the telegraph announced Walter's death, it seemed impossible. We learn he became ill on his way home from here, and was taken direct to the hospital from the train, where an operation for appendicitis was had Friday. He apparently rallied from the operation and his friends were encouraged to believe he would make a quick recovery from his illness. Then came the telegram announcing dissolution. Walter Cole was born at the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Cole near Pinhook in New Durham township Dec 30, 1866, and would have been 45 years old in Dec. He attended school in Westville for a number of years, and was a general favorite, owing to his happy disposition. He is survived by his widow, who was Miss Edith Payne, also of this township, the father, Albert Cole, and brother C. W. Cole of LaPorte. Walter adopted railroading, serving as agent for the Pere Marquette at LaCrosse, LaPorte and Michigan City. He was making good progress when C. H. Geist made him a proposition to become identified with his gas and electric interest, and it was of such an advantageous nature that Mr. Cole accepted. He spent some time in Alabama City as local manager of one of Mr. Geist's plants, after which he was advanced to manager of the plant at Atlantic City. C. H. Geist and Walter C. Cole were neighbor farmer boys and schoolmates. When Mr. Geist arose to a position among the greater financiers, and had need of loyal lieutenants it was fitting that he should look back to a boyhood friend. W. C. Cole was a member of Westville Lodge of Odd Fellows. He was also a Mason and Maccabee, and contributed much of fraternity to the lodges with which he was identified. While he was a man of jovial spirits, he was first sincere, frank and possessed of a high sense of honor. Very, very many are those who will mourn with his loved ones the ways of Providence which has stricken so helpful member of society. We are brought to realize in the demise of Walter Cole the aptness of that old saying, "Death loves a shining mark." The funeral will likely be held Saturday at LaPorte, and the burial at Door Village. The hour has not been set at this writing. *** additional note from informant Walter C. Cole, son of Albert W. and Mary Ann (Crawford) Cole. Walter's wife may have been the daughter of James Watson and Nancy Maria (Closser) Payne. James Watson Payne was a younger brother to Walter's grandmother, Eliza A. Payne, both children of Erastus Payn and Jerusha Bunce, early settlers of LaPorte County. Erastus, died 1850, is buried at Door Village and Jerusha is buried in Berlin, Green Lake, Wisconsin.
