Baker, Arthur C- "Rites Today" -- A. BAKER, 73, Former City Official, Dies Arthur C. Baker, 73 of 1544 Weller Avenue who served 3 terms as a Democratic Party city councilman from the Second ward and five years as City Water Department Superintendent died at 1:35 a.m. today at Community Hospital. Mr. Baker had been in failing health for several years. A lfielong resident of this city, Mr. Baker served as Second ward councilman after his election in 1925, 1929 and 1934. When May Alfred Norris was elected in 1938, Mr. Baker was appointed superintendt of the water works and served in that post for 5 years. After serving as supt for 5 years, he continued as an employee of the water department until his retired on May 1, 1955. Born in 1888 -- He was born in LaPorte on July 7, 1888 to Louis and Louise Zach Baker. He was married here on May 11, 1912 to mIss Lillie L. Ahlgrim, who survives. Mr. Baker was a member of the St. Paul Evangelical & Reformed Church here. Surviors besides his wife include one son, Billy C. Baker, a fire department captain here; one sister, Miss Erna Baker and one brother, Walter Baker of LaPorte and two grandhcildren. Fuenral services will be at 2 p.m.Tuesday at Otto Giese Funeral Home with Rev. Vcitor P. Frohne officiating. Burial in Pine Lake Cemetery. Friends may calla t the funeral home from 4 p.m. Monday until the time of the services. Died Friday Dec 22 buried Dec 26. - 1961?

Baker, Elmer - Mich. CIty News 13 May 1903 pg 8 c 6 -- Elmer Baker, son of Mr and Mrs. Louis Baker of Stone Lake and bro. of Mrs. C.E. Lindenmeyer of this city, passed away at 1 o'clock Friday morning after an illness of six months of tuberculosis. The deceased was born Sept 3, 1885 near Kingsbury. Surviving the deceased in addition to the parents are 3 sisters and four brothers. The funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at St. Paul's Evan Church, Laporte, Rev. She was a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ. Survivors include a brother, Walter, LaPorte and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Arthur C. Baker, with whom she lived here. BAKER, KENNETH Z. - FROM: La Porte Herald-Argus, April 14, 1997 Mr. Kenneth Z. Baker, 85, of Hamilton Grove Retirement Center, New Carlisle, and formerly of 501 Pine Lake Ave., La Porte, died Sunday, April 13, 1997, at 8:15 a.m. at his home following a lengthy illness He was born Dec. 20, 1911, in La Porte, to Walter and Marie (Wurster) Baker, and had been a lifelong resident of La Porte. Mr. Baker had retired as a deliveryman for several local dairies, was a former Elks Club member and was a member of La Porte Old Timers Baseball Association. On Nov. 10, 1934, in La Porte, he married Charlotte Reiser, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Barbara Clark and Carol Kuta, both of La Porte, and Marilyn Miller of Denver; eight grandchildren, two step grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Essling Funeral Home with Rev. George Vrabely officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10:30 a.m. until the service Tuesday. Internment in Pine Lake Cemetery will take place at a later date. Baker, Louis - LaPorte Argus, 3-2-1922 -- Louis Baker, age 72 years of Weller Avenue died at his home at 1:34 Thursday morning. The deceased was born in Germany and came to this country when he was 18 years of age. When he was 21 he was married to Louise Zach, who survives him. the following relatives also survive: brothers, John B. Baker and 7 children Mrs. HT Lange; verne and Arthur of LaPorte; Mrs. FC Lindenmeyer, Michigan City; Emil and Walter, of South Bend and Miss Erma Baker of Laporte. He also leaves 9 grandchildren. The deceased was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Church and of the Odd Fellows. the funeral will be held from St. Paul's Church at 3:30 Saturday afternoon. Rev. Braizel officiating. Mrs. Louise Baker, 91, died at 9:30 this morning at her home, 1540 Weller Avenue. She had been in failing health since before Christmas. She was born 28 August 1849 in Trapton, Mecklenburg, Germany, but came to LaPorte 84 years ago from her birthplace. On 16 October, 1871 she was married to Louis Baker, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Baker was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Church. Surving are three sons, Arthur Baker, 1544 Weller avenue; E.W. Baker, 1602 Weller avenue; E.W. Baker, South Bend; two daughters, Mrs. C.E. Lindenmeyer, of Michigan City and Miss Irna Baker, at home, and other relatives, including 10 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at home Monday at 2:30, the Rev. Victor P. Frohne officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake cemetery with A.J. Reiser in charge. The body may be viewed at the home tommorrow afternoon and untill time for the funeral.

Garden street, La Porte, died at 11 p.m. Friday at La Porte Hospital after an illness of six months. He was born April 22, 1912 in Burdick, Ind., to Oscar and Anna (Keller) Beam. He was married May 25, 1935 in South Bend to Shirley Shafer. He was a machinery repairman for American Home Foods until his retirement in 1974; he was a member of FOP and was very active in Citizens Band Radio. Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Gerald (Marlene) Krcilek, of La Porte; Mrs. Larry (Ann) Bowen, of Marysville, Wash.; Mrs. Robert (Sharon) Blake, of La Porte; three sons, Dale E. Beam, of La Porte; Lauren Beam of Westville; Terry Lee Beam, at home; two half-brothers, Warren Curtis and Landon Curtis, both of LaPorte and one half-sister, Mrs. Lilliam Brightman, of St. Petersburg, Fla. One half-sister and one half-brother preceded him in death. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Cutler Funeral Home with Rev. Ronald Dubbeis officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Sunday and until the hour of services Monday at the funeral home.

Bell, Halo - "MRS. HALO BELL - Mrs. Halo BELL, 51, of route 1, died at 2:05 yesterday afternoon at the Fairview hospital after a three-year illness.
  She was born Oct. 25, 1904 in La Porte to Frank A. and Pearl (MILLER) LITTLETON and had lived here most of her life, living in Montana three years.
  Mrs. BELL was married March 28, 1925 in St. Joseph, Michigan., to George Lyndon BELL. She was a member of the Waterford Methodist church, WSCS and also taught Sunday school at the church.
  Surviving are her husband; four daughters, Mrs. Warren EVANS and Mrs. Joe McDONALD, both of La Porte; Iona BELL, at home, and Mrs. Jay WALDROP, Gary; her parents, La Porte; four sisters, Mrs. W. L. PITMON, Jackson, Mich.; Marjorie LITTLETON, LaPorte; Mrs. Marvin Loveland, Kalamazoo, Mich.; Mrs. Frank C. COOK, Saudi Arabia, and six grandchildren.
   Funeral services will be at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Otto E. Giese Funeral home with the Rev. Paul BAKER, Brook, Ind., officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake cemetery. Friends may call at the Otto E. Giese chapel tomorrow noon and until time of services."

BENNITT, GUSTA M.     Gusta M. Bennitt, 78, of 4484N 700E., Rolling Prairie, died at 11 pm Sunday at the LaPorte Hospital. She was born Feb. 25, 1897 in St. Joseph Co, to Joseph A. and Minnie B. (Haverstock) Hostetler. She was married March 5, 1919 in St. Joseph Co. to Marvin L. Bennitt. She was a member of the Olive Chapel Church and the Order of the Eastern Star, 658, Rolling Prairie. Surviving are her husband; three sisters, Mrs. Marie Dalton of South Bend; Mrs. Ruth Miller of LaPorte; Mrs. Ann Carlson of Chicago; two brothers, Allan Clair Hostetler of Herrin, Ill, and Schyler Hostetler of New Carlisle. One son preceded her in death. Funeral services will be at 1 pm Wednesday at the Olive Chapel Church with Rev. Kenneth R. Hemphill officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery. Friends may call at the Haverstock Funeral Home from noon Tuesday until 10:30 am Wednesday, then at the church until the hour of services. MRS. W. J. BLANKSCHEIN - Mrs. Elizabeth Blankschein, age 53, of 312 Fox Street, wife of Walter J. Blankschein, passed away at 1:15 p.m. yesterday at the Holy Family hospital. Mrs. Blankschein was born at MichiganCity on Dec. 1, 1886, the daughter of Rudolph and Bertha (Speikein) Freyer. On June 4, 1909, in LaPorte , she was married to Mr. Blankschein. They couple resided in LaPorte since their marriage. Mrs. Blankschein was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and Circle No. 3 of the Ladies Aid. Surviving are her husband; one brother, Frank Freyer of Michigan City, and several nieces & nephews. Funeral servcices will be held at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon at the Ebbert & Giese funeral home. The Rev. Manfred E. Reinke will officiate and burial will be in Pine Lake cemetery. The body may be viewed at the Ebbert & Geise home this evening and thence until the time of the services. MRS. ELIZABETH BORMAN - Obituary LaPorte Herald-Argus 7 January 1946 - "Mrs. Elizabeth Borman, 78, of 241 Lincolnway East, died at 8:30 last night at her home. The daughter of John and Elizabeth Tanger Holtz, she was born in Germany on October 3, 1867, and lived here since 1873, coming from Germany. She was married to Alfred C. Borman in LaPorte, who survives. Mrs. Borman was a member of St. John's Lutheran church and of the Ladies Aid of that church. Also survives are one son, Alfred F. Borman of Des Moines, Iowa; a brother, Charles Holtz of route 4; a granddaughter, Mrs. Ruth Tjaden, Peoria, Ill; a great-grandson, Terry Tjaden of Peoria, and several nieces and nephews. A sister, Mrs. Anna Daniels preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Giese and Kimball funeral home with the Rev. Manfred E. Reinke officiating. She was born Jan. 3, 1892, in Rolling Prairie to James and Georgianna Shellingberger Harris and had lived in La Porte County all her life. She was a member of the First Christian Church. On Oct. 15, 1913, in South Bend, she married David T. Clark who died March 15, 1971. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Romaine) Wilke of La Porte and Mrs. John (Virginia) Bellemore of Harper Woods, Mich.; two sons, Lawrence "Larry" and Robert W., both of La Porte; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Closser, Deacon N.W.   From "The Daily Herald, LaPorte, Indiana"   Saturday June 20, 1891.   -   Deacon N. W. Closser died last evening at 8 o’clock. He was 79 years old the 13th of January last, and was born in Washington County, Penn on Jan. 13, 1812. He was taken by his parents to Warren County, Ohio at the age of three years. Subsequently his parents moved to Butler County, where the deceased lived until 11 years of age, when the family moved to Indianapolis, arriving there Jan. 8, 1823. In April 1834 Mr. Closser came to LaPorte County, settling near Door Village and he remained a resident of the County until his death. In 1833 he married Rebecca, daughter of William Parker, formerly of Penn., who preceeded him in death. To them were born six children, namely, Daniel P.; Elizabeth H.; Jerome B.; Sylvanus M.; Joseph A.; and Emily R., who are all living except Joseph A. He died at Indianapolis. About 8 years ago he married his second wife in whom he found a true helpmate and whose kind ministrations attended him in the hour of death.
  The deceased had been for nearly 50 years a Deacon of the Baptist Church, in whose communion he died. He was a pupil in the first Sabbath School organized in Marion County. He and his brother were the first teachers of music in this part of the country. He was the second constable of the County and trustee of Scipio Township one term. He was Superintendent of Schools and participated in the Black Hawk War.
  Mr. Closser always took part in public affairs and was identified with the Whig and Republican parties.
  Funeral services will be held at the family residence, 1406 Indiana Ave., tomorrow at 4 P.M. Interment will be in Pine Lake Cemetery.

Cross - Mrs. Marilla Davis Cross   The LaPorte Daily Argus, Saturday, June 24, 1922 - Mrs. Marilla Davis Cross died at 7 o'clock yesterday morning at the home of her son, B.F. Cross, at Waterford. Mrs. Cross was born in Chautauqua county, New York, on January 15, 1824, and was 98 years old at the time of her demise. Her marriage to Philander Cross took place on June 15, 1845. She had been a resident of Indiana for 86 years. Surviving her are two children, B.F. Cross, of Waterford, with whom she made her home, and Mrs. William Gregg, of Longmont, Cal; 10 grand-children, 18 great-grand-children and two great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will take place at 3:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the home of B.F. Cross at Waterford, with a Christian Science service. Burial will take place in Pine Lake cemetery.

  Harry A. Curtis, 77, of 312 Woodward street, died at 4:10 a.m. Sunday at Pine Lake division hospital after an illness of two years. He was born March 27, 1894, in LaPorte to Winfield Scott and Flora (McLean) Curtis and had lived here all his life. Mr. Curtis was a retired Allis-Chalmers employee. He was married in La Porte, May 13, 1922, to Florence Russell. He was a WWI veteran and a member of the American Legion. Surviving are his wife; one son, Frank Curtis, St. Joseph, MI; three grandaughters and one brother, Frank W. Curtis, Bradenton, FL. Isabelle (Daniels) Ebeck -Obituary - LaPorte Herald-Argus 2 December 1983 - ISABELLE EBECK "Mrs. Isabelle Daniels Ebeck, 81, of 4101N CR-50W, LaPorte, died Sunday, Dec. 4, at 8:15 p.m. at LaPorte Hospital. She was born Feb. 15, 1902, in Black Hawk, Colo., to Mathias and Anna (Holtz) Daniels and had lived here most of her life. She was a member of the LaPorte Presbyterian Church where she was a teacher and secretary for the Sunday school for many years. She had retired from the LaPorte County courthouse. On April 26, 1928, in LaPorte, she married Frank J. Ebeck who died July 10, 1977. Surviving are one niece and several cousins. The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Haverstock Funeral Home with Dr. W. William Wimberly officiating.    "C. W. Francis. Charles William Francis, 82, an employee of the La Porte post office for 32 years until his retirment, died at his home, 314 Grove street, at 12:45 this morning.
  "From Nov. 1, 1897 until he retired Oct. 7, 1929, Mr. Francis was a postal employee. Before that he had been a school teacher. He was also known to thousands of LaPorte county fairgoers for years as one of the ticket sellers at the main gate box office.
  "Mr. Francis was born in LaPorte county Oct. 8, 1869, the son of Simeon and Mary E. Martin Francis, and had lived in this county practically all his life. On March 12, 1884 he was married at New Buffalo to Eva Holcomb.
   "He obtained his high school education at Three Oaks and later he attended Central university at Pella, Ia. Mr. Francis was an active member of the First Methodist church here until the infirmities of old age forced him to remain at home.

  "MRS. EVA H. FRANCIS. Mrs. Eva H. Francis, 80 years old, widow of the late Charles W. Francis, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Galen Chaney, Xenia, Ohio, at 2:05 a.m. today, according to word received here by friends.   "Mrs. Francis resided at 314 Grove street until the death of Mr. Francis July 24, 1943, when she went to live with her daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Francis came to LaPorte from Galena township over 50 years ago. Mr. Francis was in the LaPorte post office for 32 years. Mrs. Francis was active in church work, as a Sunday school teacher in the First Methodist church, and as president of the Ladies Aid society. She was a past matron of the Orient chapter, Eastern Star, a member of the Past Matrons club, and for five years served as president of the Floral Hall of the LaPorte County Fair.
  "She was born near Posey Chapel in this county, July 12, 1864, the daughter of [James] Henry and Hanna Holcomb. Mr. and Mrs. Francis were married in New Buffalo, March 12, 1884.
  "There were two daughters, both of whom survive, Mrs. Bert Mullarky of Albuquerque, N. M., and Mr. and Mrs. Chaney of Xenia. There are five grandchildren and eight [great ?] grandchildren.
  "The body is to be brought to LaPorte and funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the O. M. Haverstock chapel. Rev. Clyde H. Lininger will officiate, assisted by Rev. Robert G. Chaney of Eaton Rapids, Mich., a grandson of the deceased woman. The Eastern Star will have services at the Haverstock chapel from Thursday noon until time of the services. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery."

MATHIAS DANIELS - Obituary LaPorte Herald-Argus 24 February 1940 - "Funeral services for Mathias Daniels, 75, of rural route No. 3, LaPorte, who died at the Fairview hospital yesterday morning, will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Haverstock chapel, Dr. S. Arthur Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake cemetery with O.M. Haverstock in charge. The body may be viewed at the Haverstock chapel from tonight until time for the funeral. Mr. Daniels was born in Dobsina, Hungary, on Feb. 24, 1864. He came here 20 years ago from Central City, Colo. On May 25, 1898 he married in LaPorte to Anna Holtz, who died five years ago. Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Frank Ebeck, LaPorte; one sister in Hungary and several nephews and nieces. A brother and a sister preceded him in death."

MATHIAS DANIELS - Obituary LaPorte Herald-Argus 11 December 1934 - "Mrs. Anna Holtz Daniels, age 65, wife of Mathias Daniels of rural route 3, passed away at 12:05 a.m., today at the home of her sister, Mrs. Alfred Borman, 241 Lincolnway East. She had been ill three months with a complication of diseases. The daughter of John and Elizabeth Holtz, she was born in Germany on July 9, 1869. She had lived in LaPorte for the past 14 years, moving here from Colorado. Mrs. Daniels girlhood days were spent in LaPorte as she came here with her parents when she was four years old. She left LaPorte to go to Colorado and returned here 14 years ago. She was married to Mathias Daniels in LaPorte on May, 25, 1899. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. Surviving are her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Frank Ebeck of LaPorte; one sister, Mrs. Borman of this city; one brother, Charles Holtz of Kankakee township; one stepbrother, Charles Freeland of LaPorte and a number of nieces and nephews. Arrangements for the funeral, in charge of O.M. Haverstock, are incomplete, and will be announced later. The body may be viewed this evening at the Borman home."

EMMA DANKERT - Obituary LaPorte Herald-Argus Friday, 8 February 1946 - "Mrs. Emma Dankert, 54, of 201 J Street, died at 6 o'clock this morning at the Holy Family hospital after an illness of three months. The daughter of William and Bertha Borchert, she was born in LaPorte on May 21, 1891 and had lived here all her life. On May 20, 1911 in LaPorte, she was married to Herman F. (Cutie) Dankert, manager of the Civic Auditorium bowling alleys, who survives. She was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church. Also survives are one daughter, Miss Mildred Dankert, at home; four sons, Walter, LaPorte, Arthur and Donald, both at home, and Norman of Michigan City, and two grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Minnie Gerdes, LaPorte, and a brother William Reinholtz, New Carlisle. One son preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Haverstock chapel with the Rev. M.E. Reinke officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery. Michigan City News-Dispatch Harold Dankert LaPORTE - Harold W. Dankert, 87, LaPorte, died at 7:10 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 9, 2001) at LaPorte Hospital. Private family services were held and cremation took place. Burial of ashes will take place in Pine Lake Cemetery at a later date. He was born April 21, 1914, in LaPorte, to Clarence and Ella (Kohne) Dankert. On Oct. 28, 1939, in LaPorte, he married Eileen Smutzer, who survives in LaPorte. Survivors also include one sister, Loraine Levenhagen, Hendersonville, N.C.; and two brothers, Howard Dankert, West Plains, Mo., and Warren (Rose) Dankert, Michigan City. Preceding Mr. Dankert in death was one brother, Gilmore Dankert. Mr. Dankert was an operating engineer for Brown Inc. He was a member of First Baptist Church of LaPorte. He belonged to Local 150 Operating Engineers, and Moose Lodge 492. Mr. Dankert served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Deako was the superintendent at the Jenison Mfg. Co. before his retirement. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Mary) Tillman of Grand Rapids and Mrs. Charles (Madeline) V. Kelsey of Calif.; five grandchildren, one brother Arthur Deako of Ohio; two sisters, Miss Irene Deako of LaPorte, Ind., and Mrs. Ruth Joyce of Michigan City, Ind.; a half brother Jack Byrne of Calif. Mr. Deako reposes at the Grandville Chapel of Cook Funeral Home where funeral services will be held 10am Wednesday, with his pastor the Rev. William Wiltse of the Grandville United Methodist Church officiating. Interment Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte, Ind. Masonic services will be held 8pm Tuesday under the auspices of the Crescent Lodge No. 322, F&AM. The family will be at the funeral home 7 to 9 Monday and Tuesday."

Fisher, Peter - OBITUARY LAPORTE DAILY HERALD 9 SEPTEMBER 1923 PETER FISHER Last taps were sounded for Peter Fisher, Civil War veteran and only living ex-commander of Patton Post, at his home, 312 Mechanic street, at 4:45 a.m. today, following an illness of two years with paralysis. Mr. Fisher was born in Pennsylvania Jan. 5, 1845, being 78 years, eight months and 16 days old at the time of his death. Twenty-nine years ago he came to LaPorte from Elkhart. The deceased veteran married Elizabeth Miller at South Bend on May 16. 1874. Mr. Fisher was a member of the Christian Church. A Widow, three sons and two daughters survive the deceased man. They are Mrs. Peter Fisher of La Porte, Charles M. Fisher of Lansing, Michigan; Frank Fisher of Columbiaville, Mich; Robert C. Fisher of La Porte, Ind; Mrs. Mary Shigley of Toledo, Ohio; Eva Berkheiser of South Bend; One brother, Henry Fisher, and a sister, Sarah Renner, both of Northumberland, Pa, 19 grand children , and ten great-grandchildren also survive. Mr. Fisher enlisted in Company D, 52nd Pennsylvania Volunteers, at the beginning of the Civil War. He was discharged on July 12, 1865 and reenlisted in the same regiment on October 13, 1865. He was discharged again on Feb 28 1866. Following is a list of battles in which Mr. Fisher engaged: Lee's Mills, in April, 1862; Williamsburgh, May 5, 1892; Chickahominy, May 19, 1862; Seven Pines, Fair Oaks, May 31, 1862; Railroad and Bottom bridges, June 27 and 28, 1862; White Oak Swamp Bridge, June 30, 1862; Carter's Hill, July 2, 1862; Mathews County, Nov 22, 1862; Glouchester, Virginia, Dec 14, 1862; Yorktown, Aug 17 to December 31 1862. Funeral services will be held at the residence at 2:30pm Monday. The Rev.M.G. Long will oficiate. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery with E. E. Ebbert as the undertaker.

Freeland, Chris   -  Chris Freeland, - Obituary LaPorte Herald-Argus 22 August 1918 - 73 years of age, well known farmer living for many years on his farm some four miles north of the city, died at 5 o'clock this morning at the home of his son, Charles Freeland, which is in the same neighborhood. Mr. Freeland was born in Germany December 28, 1844. He came to America in 1868 and settled in LaPorte County. Some time later he was married in LaPorte to Miss Louise Swartzkopf, whose death occurred in 1873. To this union there were born three children now living. They are Mrs. Ida Tibbs of Midland, Mich., Charles Freeland and Fred Freeland of LaPorte County. In 1877 Mr. Freeland was married to Mrs. Elizabeth Holtz who survives him. Of this union was born one child Henry Freeland, now living in this county. The deceased also three stepchildren, who are children of the second wife. They are Mrs. Lizzie Borman of LaPorte, Mrs. Anna Daniels of Blackhawk, Colorado, and Charles Holtz of LaPorte County. He also leaves one brother, Charles Freeland of LaPorte. More information as follows: Obituary Elizabeth (Tanger) (Holst) Freeland LaPorte Newspaper 20 December 1918 THE DEATH RECORD Mrs. Elizabeth Freeland, who died yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alfred Bormann, was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, November 17, 1840. She was married in the year 1866 to John Holtz, who died in July 1874. To this union were born three children. On the 11th of March 1877, she was married to Chris Freeland. To this union one son was born, Henry Freeland, who died six weeks ago. Mother and son were devoted companions and it is believed that the shock of his death hastened that of his mother. The deceased was a member of the German Lutheran Church. She had a beautiful Christian character, devoting her entire life to her loved ones. For the past 42 years she had lived on the old homestead and during all those years she was always a kind neighbor, ready to lend assistance wherever needed. The deceased is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Alfred Bormann, of this city, and Mrs. Mathias Daniels, of Central City, Colorado, and one son, Charles Holtz, of LaPorte, three step children, and one brother, William Tanger. (Coot) Freese, 59, of 364 Fairmont road, Kingsford Heights, died at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the LaPorte hospital following a sudden illness. He was born January 30, 1915 in Starke County Indiana to Lawrence and Martha (Hay) Freese and had lived in this area all of his life. Mr. Freese was an employee of Allis-Chalmers. He was married January 1, 1937 to Margaret Gallo. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Union. Surviving are his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Truman (Gloria) Helt of LaPorte, two sons, William R. Ohio St., was pronounced dead at Porter Memorial Hospital, Valparaiso, Friday night following an auto accident that occurred near there. Mrs. Freese, wife of the Rev. Curtis Freese of LaPorte, was born on Jan. 6, 1914 in Chicago to John and Valerie (Ordinski) Berkowski. She had lived in LaPorte since 1956, coming here from Bluffton. She was married to Curtis Freese on May 30, 1932 in LaPorte. Mrs. Freese belonged to the Apostolic Church in Valparaiso where her husband served as pastor. Survivors include one son, Eugene of LaPorte; one daughter, Miss Sharon Freese, LaPorte; two grandchildren, three brothers, Edmund Berk of LaPorte; Herman Berkowski, LaPorte and Louis Berkowski, Flint, Mich. A double funeral service for Mrs. Freese and her husband, who was killed in the accident, will be held at 1 pm Tuesday at the Apostolic Church in Valparaiso. Rev. James Bates will officiate. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery. Friends may call at the Haverstock Funeral Home Sunday evening and until l10 am Tuesday at the Havestock Chapel and from 11 am to time of the services Tuesday at the church in Valparaiso. Mrs. Frank Freyer, 34 living on the East Dunes highway, near Michigan City, died yesterday morning at 8 at the Clinic hospital, following an illness with pneumonia. She was born Oct 11, 1902, in Michigan City, as Ruby Lucille Badkey.
She is survived by her father, Ernest Badkey of LaPorte, her mother, Mrs. Jessie Joslin, Chicago; four sisters, Mrs. Garner Cibbs of LaPorte; Mrs. Genevieve Keeler, Mrs. Louise Kelly, and Mrs. Dolores Holbrook, all of Chicago; two brothers, Ernest and Lawrence Badkey, both of LaPorte; one grandmother, Mrs. Clara Scott, Michigan City, and her husband.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 at the Ott Funeral Chapel, Michigan City. Burial will be in Pine Lake cemetery here. Friends may view the body tomorrow.

  Mrs Alma M. Gross, age 55, of 502 East Maple avenue, passed away at 3:30 yesterday afternoon at the Henrotin Memorial hospital in Chicago. The daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Moyer, Mrs Gross was born in Ohio on Jan 27, 1878, moving to this state at the age of 14. She was married in LaPorte in June, 1896, to Benjamin F. Gross, who preceded in death on Oct 3, 1930. Mrs Gross was a member of the Christian church. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs Warner Held of LaPorte and Mrs Delano N. White of Gary, a son, Robert L. Gross, at home, her mother, Mrs Sarah Collins of Three Rivers, Mich, two sisters Mrs Nettie Newkirk of Joliet, Mont, and Mrs Frank Wetherbee of Three Rivers, Mich, and a brother James Moyer of Ohio. A son, Earl Gross, preceded in death on June 3, 1928. Funeral services will be held at the residence at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, the Rev. Clayton H. Wilson officiating.   Benjamin F. Gross The son of David J. and Chestina Yarger Gross, he was born near Hanna on Jan 1, 1876, and spent his boyhood days there. On Aug 23, 1896, he was united in marriage to Mary Alma Moyer of this city and to them were born two sons and two daughters. The elder son, Earl Raymond, preceded his father in death. Mr. Gross moved with his family in 1898 to a farm near LaPorte and in 1902 entered the postal service here. He established his own route, which was the custom of the department at that time. He served this route diligently for 16 years, resigning Jan 1, 1918, to assume the superintendency of the county farm. Mr Gross was reappointed superintendent in 1922. He returned to this city on March 1, 1926, residing at 905 Detroit street. He is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mrs Delano White of Gary and Mrs Warner held of LaPorte, one son, Robeert Lee, at home, four grandchildren, four brothers, George M., and Walter B, of LaPorte, Harry E, of South Bend, and Fredrick E. of Yonkers, NY, two step-brothers, Harry Sheely of Springfield, Ohio, and Forest Sheely of Hanna, one step-sister, Mrs Alice Gooden of this city. Mr Gross also hads a large circle of neighbors and other friends.

Gross, Sr, who died at his home, 207 East Jefferson avenue, yesterday noon, will be conducted by the Rev. Herschel L. Conley at the Haverstock chapel at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Gross - EARL RAYMOND GROSS  obit appeared LaPorte, Indiana newspaper 6/4/1928 "Herald-Argus" EARL RAYMOND GROSS Earl Raymond Gross, age 31, died yesterday after an illness of two weeks. The son of Mr and Mrs Benjamin F. Gross, he was born at Hanna on March 19, 1897. In 1898 he came to LaPorte with his parents, later attending the public schools of this city. At the age of 16, he enlisted in the U.S. navy. After preliminary training at the Great Lakes Training station he entered the Naval Electrical school at Brooklyn. Upon completing the electrical course, he finished his enlistment on the battleship, Arkansas, and was honorably discharged as an electrician, first class. During most of the time Mr Gross was on the U.S.S. Arkansas, this ship was used to convoy transport ships. After his discharge in June, 1918, he returned to LaPorte to visit his parents for a short time and later was drafted into the army, training with an artillery company at Fort Benjamin Harrison. After the armistice, he was transferred to the Debarkation hospital, New York City, where he served for several months as an electrician. Mr Gross returned to LaPorte in 1919 and entered the electrical business, in which he made many friends. On Oct 16, 1923, he married Miss Cecil N. Wright of this city. He was a member of the Christian church, the American legion, Chamber of Commerce, Knights of Pythias and Modern Woodmen. Mr Gross is surived by his widow and parents, two sisters, Mrs D.N. White of Gary and Mrs W.M. Held, and one brother, Robert Lee Gross of this city. The funeral will be held at the Wright home, 402 D street, at 2 pm Wednesday. Burial will be in Pine Lake cemetery with E.E. Ebbert in charge. The body may be viewed at the home Tuesday afternoon and evening.

HOCK, George R.,(PINE LAKE CEMETERY, LaPorte, Indiana) b. June 1862, in Bohemia, Austrian Empire to George and Catherine (VOREL) HOCK who had a farm north of Rolling Prairie. George emigrated in 1978 behind his parents who emigrated in 1870. I believe he emigrated with his Uncle Frank Vorel (Wearl). George was the brother of John P. HOCK b. 1872 of Michigan City, Indiana, and the uncle of Big Al (Aloysius) and Little Al (Eligius) HOCK near Rolling Prairie and Hudson Lake areas. George R. HOCK married Cathie, b. December 1862 in Indiana. George and Cathie had three sons, and one daughter: Matthew b. December 1886, Nicholas b. January 1890 and Joseph b. December 1895, and Fannie b. 1892 according to a 1900 census record of Center Township, LaPorte, Indiana where they lived.
George died in 1948 from injures received when he was struck by a car driven by Dale Rose of near LaPorte, while crossing the street near his home. He was 87 years old when the accident happened. He died at Fairview Hospital. His funeral was officiated by Rev. E. Schumaker.

The son of Mr. And Mrs. John Holtz, he was born Nov. 11, 1871 in Germany. He had lived in LaPorte County since he was two years old, coming from Germany. He was a retired farmer. Mr. Holtz was married Nov. 11, 1902 in Wanatah to Elizabeth Gillham who survives. The deceased belonged to the Maccabee lodge. HOSTETLER, MRS. ALICE DAWSON    - Mrs. Alice Dawson Hostetler, age 63, of Wills township, died last night at her home following a short illness. She was born April 10, 1864, in Wills township, the daughter of Obadiah and Polly Dawson, and lived in this county all her life. She was united in marriage on April 6, 1892 to John H. Hostetler, who survives her. She was a faithful member of the Christian church at Sauktown. Besides her husband the following survive; two daughters, Miss Mable Hostetler at home, Mrs. Ethel L. Haverstock of LaPorte; two grandchildren, Eleanor and John W. Haverstock; three brothers George Dawson of Kokomo, Aaron Dawson of Wills township and Irvin Dawson of LaPorte; one sister, Miss Sarah E. Dawson. Three sisters preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home, the Rev. M.G. Long officiating. HOSTETLER, MABEL    - Mabel A. Hostetler, 79, of route 1, Mill Creek, died today at 4:50 am at the Anderson Nursing home. She was born in LaPorte county on May 27, 1894 to John and Alice (Dawson)Hostetler, and has lived in LaPorte county all her life. She was a member of the First Christian Church of LaPorte, and a charter member of the Wills Township Home Demonstration club circle No. 6 of the church. Survivors include, one sister, Mrs. Ethel Haverstock, of LaPorte; one niece and one nephew; and one grandniece and one grandnephew. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 pm at the Haverstock chapel, with Revs. Wallace Jones and Elmer C. Johnston officiating. Friends may call from Friday noon until the time of services. Houston, Oliver  -  Oliver Houston - LaPorte Herald Argus about 1955: Oliver Houston Oliver Houston, 67, of Alhambra Calif.., husband of the former Dr. Grace Line Homan of LaPorte, died at 8:30 Sunday night at their home in Alhambra. He had been ill for one year. Mr. Houston was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on 1 Jan., 1888. He and Dr. Homan were married at Ventura, Calif., on April 21, 1933. He was a member of the Methodist church. His wife survives. Funeral services will take place at the Cutler Funeral home here at 3:30 Friday with the Rev. Eugene R. Balsley officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake cemetery. Kaufmann, Rudolph   -   RUDOLPH KAUFMANN - Rudolph Kaufmann, 80, of 8456 Euclid avenue. Chicago, died at ll:05 o'clock this morning at the Fairview hospital. The son of Andrew and Louise Kaufmann, he was born in Chicago on April 8, 1868.
On. Jan. 8,1890 in LaPorte he was married to Sophia Lange, who survives. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Dora Evans of Whiting and Mrs. Christine Bryan, Chicago. One daughter preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the Griesel Chapel, 10240 Ewing avenue, Chicago, with the Rev. Mr. Stauch officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake cemetery. O.M. Knief, 33, 0f 382 Sassafras Dr., Valparaiso, died Friday, April 11, 1997, at 11:36 p.m. on U.S. 30 east of Ind. 51, Merrillville. He was born Dec. 20, 1963, in Springfield, Ill., to Louis and Hilda (Wacker) Knief, and had lived in Valparaiso for 11 months, coming from Wood River, Neb. A 1986 graduate of Concordia University of River Forest, Ill,. Rev. Knief attended Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, served a one-year vicarage at Christ Lutheran Church in Little Rock, Ark., was a pastor of the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church, serving Lutheran churches in Rushin, Upland, and Wood River, Neb. An active participant in the Nebraska Lutherans for Confessional Studies, he attended St. Michael Lutheran Church in Hebron, Ind. And was a security officer at South Lake Mall. On July 16, 1988, in Valparaiso, he married Elizabeth Hallberg, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Sarah of Valparaiso; one son, Matthew of Valparaiso; his parents of Chebanse, Ill.; two sisters, Darla Heuermann of Peoria, Ill., and Kristin Ahrens of Sauk Rapids, Minn., and one brother, Rev. Roger of Sioux Falls, S.D. He was preceded in death by his grandparents. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, at St. John Lutheran church, La Porte, with Rev. Brent Kuhlman of Hebron, Neb., officiating. Friends may call at Haverstock Funeral Home from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and at the church from noon until the service Wednesday. Walkerton - Harold "Chick" Ketchum Jr. 45, of 319 Lilac Drive, died about 7 a.m. Wednesday in his home after an illness. Mr. Ketchum was employed by Century Soft Water Co., South Bend, for five years as a plumber. He was born Nov. 12, 1946, in Chicago and lived in the area for 12 years, coming from Chicago. On Nov 5, 1955, in Oak Park, Ill., he married Karen Henderson. She survives with a daughter, Nicolene A. of Fish Lake; two sons, Harold "Trace" G. III and Kenneth P., both of Fish Lake: one grand-daughter, his parents, Geraldine and Harold Ketchum Sr. of Des Plaines, Ill; a sister Jean Ketchum of Chicago: and a brother, Peter. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Norman Leap, one of the best known farmers in Laporte county, died at his home near the Summit Wednesday afternoon of apoplectic paraylsis. He was stricken about ten days ago, since which time he had been gradually failing until the end came. The deceased was born in Switzerland county, IN October 24, 1830. He received his education at the college for mutes at Indianapolis. He was married to Mary A. Pointon in 1862, two years following his removal to Laporte county. He and his bride settled on the homestead where Mrs. Leap died seven years ago and where Mr. Leap passed away. The deceased is survived by one son, Charles Leap of Laport county and two daughters Mrs. O. D. Burlingame of Laport country and Mrs. C. M. White of Chicago. He also leaves one half brother James Neal of California and two half sisters, Eliza Chambers of Lebanon, and Mrs. Frances Shaddy of Vevay. Mr. Leap was a man of kindly disposition. He had hosts of friends who regret deeply his death. Both Mr. and Mrs. Leap were devoted members of the Dunkard church. The funeral service will be held at the summit church sunday morning at 10 o'clock and the burial will take place at Pine Lake cememtary. (1908 Newspaper - died 24 Oct 1908)

Leap, Mary Ann  At 10 o'clock Saturday evening Mrs. Mary Ann Leap died at her home near the Summit. The deceased had been in poor health for the past year. Her demise, however, was a shock to the family on account of its suddeness. Mrs. Leap was born near Liverpool, England, Jan.17, 1838 and when a child, came to this country. After a brief residence in New York the family moved to Laporte County, where Mrs. Leap was married in 1861. Three children with the husband survive. They are Mrs. O. D. Burlingame, Summit: Mrs. C.M. White, Chicago and Charles, who lives at home. Mrs. Leap was a mute and was educated at the state institution for mutes at Indianapolis. She was a devout believer in the Dunkard faith and the good works recorded of her are countless. She had a large circle of friends who will feel they have sustained a personal loss. He was born June 17, 1926 in Dziedzice, Poland to Victor and Elizabeth (Kolasa) Macher and had lived in Michigan City for 51 years, coming from Poland. Mr. Macher retired in 1984 after 32 years as a route salesman for F.W. Means Company. He was also a wholesale deliveryman for Angelo Bernacchi's and a bartender for PNA for many years. He was a member of PNA, PRCU, Polish Falcons, Moose Lodge of LaPorte, F.O.P. of LaPorte and the PNA Rod and Gun Club. During WWII he was in forced labor in Germany and France from 1941 to 1945. In May of 1945 he volunteered for the Polish Land Forces and spent one year in Italy under British command. He then served as part of the Polish Resettlement Corp until 1948. On Oct. 23, 1965, in Michigan City, he married Helen Wawok who survives. Also surviving are four daughters, Nancy Baslinger of New Buffalo, Mich., Rosemarie Emerick of LaPorte, Cynthia Hycner of Michigan City, and Debra Kuspa of South Bend; four sons, Kenneth Wawok, James and Robert all of LaPorte and William of Colorado; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Hilda Duis of Littleton, Colo. Lawrence Moeschl, age 43, of 203 Warren street, passed away at the Holy Family hospital at 1 o'clock this morning after an illness of three months. The deceased man was born in Germany, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Moeschl. He had lived in this country for the past 18 years, being a moulder by occupation. Surviving are his mother, Elizabeth Moeschl of La Porte, three brothers, Joseph Moeschl of Wisconsin, William and Anton Moeschl of La Porte; one sister, Mary Bolster of La Porte. He was a World War II veteran and an employee of the Casting Service corporation. He was born in Starke County on May 9, 1905 to Arthur and Julian Ann (Hay) Palen. He lived here most of his life. He was born Jan. 30, 1923 in Jonesboro, Ark., to Lucy (Blazier) and Ace M. Pattillo Sr., and had lived in Three Oaks for more than 30 years, moving to Michigan City four months ago.
  Mr. Pattillo was a member of Church of the Nazarene in Michigan City, American Legion Post 204 of Three Oaks and International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 214, had retired from Michigan State Highway Dept., and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. On March 22, 1969, in Galien, Mich., he married Irene E. Spaulding, who died Dec. 3, 1996. He was also preceded in death by one son, William "Pete" Spaulding, his parents and one sister, Lucille Morris. Surviving are five daughters, Charlotte Burbridge of Auburn, Wash., Connie Cyphert of South Bend, Bonnie Herrygers of Hart, Mich., Carol June Beason of Arkansas, and Shelia Wolf of Memphis, Tenn.; six sons, Jerry Morris of Birmingham, Ala., Fred Spaulding of Michigan City, Rev. Paulis  -  HENRY JOHN PAULIS - Obituary LaPorte Herald-Argus 17 February 1928 - "Henry John Paulis, age 66, of 309 Grove Street, died at 10:48 last night after an illness of three weeks. The son of Mr. And Mrs. John Paulis, the deceased man was born in LaPorte on March 4, 1861, and lived here all his life. On Sept. 16, 1883, he married Cora A. Bement in New Buffalo, Mich. He was member of the First Christian church and the K.O.T.M. During the war he was a member of the home guards. Mr. Paulis is survived by his widow; two sons, Bert and Russell Paulis, both of LaPorte; four daughters, Mrs. Earl Crowe and Mrs. Louise Wrase of LaPorte (should be sister not daughter) and Mrs. Roy Fuller and Miss Nettie Paulis of Detroit. Five grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held at the home at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon. The Rev. M. G. Long will officiate. "Russell E. Paulis, 84, of 211 Maple Ave., died at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at LaPorte Hospital after a four-week illness. He was born Sept. 2, 1892, in LaPorte to Henry and Cora (Bement) Paulis and had lived here all his life. Mr. Paulis was a machinist for the U.S. Slicing Machine Co. He was married Sept. 25, 1917, in LaPorte, to Ethel M. Blank who died Feb. 26, 1971. He was a member of the First Christian Church and a 50-year member of the Excelsior Lodge 41, F and AM. He was also a musician in the LaPorte Municipal Band for many years. Surviving are one daughter, Miss Betty Paulis, South Bend; one sister, Mrs. Ed (Eveleen) Reickel, LaPorte and one brother, Bert Paulis, LaPorte. Two sisters preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Haverstock Chapel with Rev. Wallace Jones officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery. Puffpaff, Albert - LaPorte Argus p 4 29 Oct 1907 -- The funeral of Albert Puffpaff, formerly of LaPorte, who died sat. morning at his home in Michigan City, was held at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon from St. John's church in MC. The serv. were conducted by Rev. Paul Irion. At 3 o'clock the remains were taken to Pine Lake cem. for burial by way of the interurban. Three special cars had been provided for the fun. party. Two of these went over with several LaPorte friends of the deceased and his family, including members of the LaPorte Knights of Pythias and Terpany tent of Maccabees. The pallbearers were chosen from those two lodges. The third car was set aside for the family of the deceased and his Michigan City friends.

Baltimore St from a complication of diseases having been ailing the past 4 years. Mr. Puffpaff was born May 8, 1861 in LaPorte and was married June 8, 1884 to Miss Cornelia Iffland, the widow who survives. Four children are left as follows: Louella, Edna, Cornelia and Louise. One brother survives, Theodore of LaPorte and two sisters, Mrs. William Zach of LaPorte and Mrs. Fred Dahne of Cleveland, Ohio. His mother, Mrs. Dorothy Pufpaff resides in LaPorte. The family resided in LaPorte until six years ago when they moved to Michigan City. He was a cabinet maker by trade. he was a member of the LaPorte Tend, KO TM and LaPorte Lodge, Knights of Pythias.   Mich. City Eve News, Monday 10-28-1907 pg 4 c 3 -- The funeral of the late A.C. Puffpaff was held this afternoon. Services were in St. John's church at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Paul Iron. Surviving are 4 daughters, Mrs OD Hitt, Mrs Charles C Gale, Miss Cornelia pUFFpaff & Mrs VA Drout, all of this city; 6 grandchildren and one gr. grandchild; one sister, Mrs. John Studinger, Chicago; and a brother Fred Iffland of South Bend. She was a member of St. Johns Evan. & Ref Church; Winona Rebekah Lodge #49 and Ladies Aid Society of St. John's. Funeral servoces will be held at 2:30 Thurs at the Hummer mort. (Freeland) Schlicht, 83, LaPorte, died at 3 p.m. Saturday (April 21, 2001) at Fountainview Terrace, LaPorte. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Haverstock Funeral Home, with Pastor Jack Cox officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery. Visitation is from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Schlicht was born Oct. 12, 1917, in La Porte, to William Henry and Lenora (Grice) Freeland. On Jan. 26, 1963, in La Porte, she married Vern Schlicht, who died in 1971. Survivors include a brother, William Freeland, South Bend; and several nieces and nephews. Also preceding her in death were one brother and one sister. Mrs. Schlicht worked in the factory at Indiana Molding and Frame for 15 years." Jeanette first married to a Lester Sipole, an immigrant from Poland. Their daughter died at age 4 on 12/18/1945. Her husband, age 38, committed suicide on 4/8/1946. She apparently remarried. In 1947, I found Jeanette I. Freeland living at 112 Fox Street with her grandparents, Charles B. and Mary Freeland. Charles is listed as a farmer. At the time, Jeanette was working as a plant dipper at "Universal Toy" company. Apparently she reverted to her maiden name.

She was born Dec. 18, 1887, in Wills Twp., LaPorte County, to Simeon and Carrie (Wiltfong) Harness and had lived in the county all her life. She was a member of LaPorte Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Women's Organization since 1945; a charter member of the Springfield Twp., LaPorte County Farm Bureau for more than 50 years; charter member of Springfield Twp., Extension Homemakers Club organization in 1924; past president of Springfield Twp., PTA; member of the American Red Cross board of directors; then and honorary board member and had received her 45-year Red Cross pin 1978. She was a member of the Mill Creek Alumni Association since 1906; attended Valparaiso University and taught in the county public school for eight years. On Feb. 22, 1913, in Michigan City, she married Walter Schultz who died Jan. 8, 1956. Surviving are one son, Victor W., with whom she made her home; one daughter, Mrs. Armin (Betty) Trujillo of Willow Springs, LaPorte; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Schultz  -  GEORGE HENRY SCHULTZ, 63. 2013 E. Michigan, died at his home at 5:20 p.m. Monday following a one-day illness. Death was caused by thrombosis. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Hummer mortuary. Rev. Paul E. Kretzmann will officiate and burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary Wednesday afternoon, evening and Thursday until the hour of the service. Pallbearers will be Walter Binsz, John Ely, Arthur Schimmel, Arthur Wolf, Kenneth Schumacher and William Muenster. Mr. Schultz, a brick mason, was born March 19, 1885, in Chicago. He was the son of Henry C. and Mary Siebert Schultz. On July 1, 1908, in this city, he was married to Bertha Raffel, who preceded him in death. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Mary Schultz, with whom he lived, a daughter, Mrs. Bernard Zriny, and three grandchildren, Mary Etta, Elaine, and Adele Zriny; all of this city. STONER, ARETTA LEVINA    Mrs. Aretta Levina Stoner, 82, of route 1, North Liberty, Ind., died at 9:30 Saturday evening at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Albert Wilson, and Mr. Wilson at North Liberty after an illness of four months. The daughter of Henry and Nancy Hostetler, she was born March 25, 1870 in St. Joseph County where she lived all her life. She was married March 9, 1892 near Rolling Prairie to Ellsworth Stoner. She was a member of the Sauktown Church of Christ. Survivors include two daughter, Mrs. Wanda Wilson of North Liberty and Mrs. Edna Haverstock of Rolling Prairie; three grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Myrtle Siddles of Michigan City, three brothers, James Alvin Hostetler and Joseph Allen Hostetler, both of New Carlisle, and Marion Llewlyn Hostetler of North Liberty; and five great grandchildren. Her husband preceded her in death in 1936. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 Wednesday afternoon at the Wilson residence and at 2 o'clock at the Sauktown Church of Christ. The Rev. O.D. STONER FUNERAL Funeral services for Ellsworth Stoner, rural route 2, LaPorte will be held Monday at 1:45 at his home and at 2:30 at the Sauktown church, the Rev. Ben Cross officiating. Mr. Stoner died Friday morning at 11:30 at his home after an illness of three months. O.M. Haverstock will be in charge of the funeral and nephews of Mr. Stoner will serve as pallbearers. The body may be viewed at the home until time for the funeral. Mr. Stoner was born in Wills township July 28, 1863 the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Stoner. He lived in this county practically all his life. He was united in marriage March 9, 1892 near Rolling Prairie to Areta Levina Hostetler, who survives. Mr. Stoner was a member of the Church of the Brethren. The surviving relatives include the widow, two daughters, Mrs. Edna Haverstock of LaPorte and Mrs. Wanda Wilson at home; three grandchildren, Donald and Lloyd Haverstock and Walter Wilson; one sister, Mrs. S.O. Dudley of Rolling Prairie; four brothers, Andrew, Walter and David, all of Rolling Prairie, and Veron of LaPorte. One brother and two sisters preceded him in death. Trujillo, Armin    - Armin Trujillo, 57, of 3627 N. Promenade Circle, died suddenly at 9 am Friday in Westvile. He was born Feb 19, 1923 in Tampa Fla., and came to LaPorte from Florida 33 years ago. He was a building contractor. Trumillo is survived by his wife Betty, who he married in LaPorte on April 6, 1947. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Paul (Deborah) Langely of Michigan City and Connie Trujillo, LaPorte; a son Jerry Trujillo of Walkerton; four grandchildren, two sisters and four brothers. He was a veteran of WW II and was a member of the John Franklin American Legion Post 37 and the League of United Latin American Citizens. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm at Haverstock Chapel and will be officiated by Dr. W. William Wimberly II. Friends may call from noon until the time of the service Sunday. The son of Joseph and Mary Wawok, he was born n Poland on Feb. 11, 1898 and had lived here for 21 years, coming from Florida. He was an employee of the Indiana Moulding and Frame Co. On July 28, 1923 in Poland he was married to Rose Medzak, who survives. He was a member of the Sacred Heart church and of the P.N.A. club. Also surviving are six sons, Joseph, Manuel, Edward, Walter, Stanley, and Casmier, all at home; and our daughters, Irene, Helen, Jeanette, and Sophia, all at home. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 9 o’clock at the Sacred Heart church with the Rev. S. Zjawinski officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake cemetery. Mary Helfen Weidner, 67 years of age, one of the oldest members of St. Joseph's Catholic church, passed away at her home, 202 E Street, at 10:20 o'clock this morning. Death was due to paralysis. Mrs. Weidner was born in Germany, June 27, 1854. Her husband, Constantine Weidner, died in 1909. Surviving Mrs. Weidner are three daughters, Mrs. John Wolff, Mrs. Benjamin Hartford, and Mrs. Emmet Doolittle, all of LaPorte; one sister, Mrs. Mary Baxter, of New Buffalo, four grandchildren and two nieces live at Chesterton,Ind.
Funeral services will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic church at 9 o'clock Thursday morning. Rev. Father Zircher will offciate and interment will be made in Pine Lake cemetery. Cutler Bros. are in charge. This was in the LaPorte Daily Argus, Tuesday, November 8, 1921.

Word has been received here of the death of Ephriam Wellwood aged 90, who passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Della Amor of Tampa, Fla. Mr. Wellwood was a former summer resident of Laporte and was well known in this city.

Wellwood, Lucinda P.  - Deaths 1922 (died June 15, 1922) Obituary - Mrs. Lucinda P. Wellwood.
  The funeral services of Mrs. Lucinda P. Wellwood were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the Christian Church. Mrs. Wellwood passed away at the family home, 313 Park street, Thursday evening, June 15, at 8:15, following an illness of 12 weeks. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Starr and was born at Greenfield, Ohio December 16, 1847. Her marriage to Ephriam Wellwood, who survives her, took place at Three Oaks, Mich., Dec 11, 1867. She si also survived by one son and three daughters, Frank O. Wellwood of Sheridan, Wyoming. Mrs. Emma Goeckel of Chicago, Mrs. J.C. Knuth of Estelline, South Dakota, and Mrs. Della Smykal of LaPorte. A son, Royal, preceded the mother. She leaves seven grandchildren, one brother, Theron P. Starr of Three Oaks, and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Dingman of Michigan City.
   Mrs. Wellwood was a member of the Free methodist church and had lived in this county for the past 50 years.

Wellwood, Royal - March, 1919 - The remains of the late Royal Wellwood, who died December 16, last year, arrived in LaPorte Friday afternoon. The remains were accompanied from Los Angeles to Laporte by his wife, Mrs. Royal Wellwood and his brother, Frank Wellwood of Wyoming. At the time of Mr. Wellwood's death, Mrs. Wellwood was seriously ill in a hospital at Los Angeles suffering from influenza and scarlet fever, so the remains were placed in a vault until Mrs. Wellwood was able to travel. Mrs. Wellwood was formerly Miss Etta Dizard of this city.
   Mr. Wellwood is survived by his parents, three children, the wife, three sisters and one brother.
   Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the chapel at the Weir Undertaking parlors at LaPorte. Interment will take place in Pine Lake Cemetery.
In the previous year on December 17, 1918, his original obit showed the following: Royal Adelbert Wellwood, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Wellwood, 313 Park Street, died at his home in Los Angeles, Cal. yesterday morning of influenza-pneumonia. He was born in LaPorte County, Oct. 27, 1887; was married to Francis H Hysard(should be Dysard) of Michigan City on Nov. 26, 1913. He is survived by his widow, who is also ill with influenza; three children, Lyle, Lucile and Harold, and his parents. There are three sisters, Mrs. W. J. Goeckel, Chicago; Mrs. J. C. She was a member of the Christian church. Surviving are one son, Howard Wilcox, La Porte; two daughters, Mrs. Joseph Corish, Rolling Prairie, and Mrs. John E. Long, La Porte; one grandson; two sisters, Mrs. L.A. Bolster, and Mrs. Anna Beam, both of La Porte. One daughter died in infancy and one son, Dorland Wilcox, died overseas in 1945. Obituary-Helen Wrase LaPorte Herald-Argus “The funeral service for Miss Helen Wrase, 81, of 1900 Andrew Ave., will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Haverstock Funeral Home with Rev. Donald Hamilton officiating. She died Saturday, Aug. 31, 1996, at 4:40 a.m. at Fountainview Terrace Nursing Home. Friends may call from 2 to 8 Wednesday and until the time of the service Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church. She was born June 8, 1915, in LaPorte, to Fred and Blanche (Parkhouse) Wrase, and was a lifelong LaPorte resident. Miss Wrase was a member of First Christian Church, the Christian Women Society, Swanson Activity Center for Older Adults, a past patron of the Community Concert Association, the LaPorte Historical Society and was a retired clerk from Hooks and Meyers Drugs where she worked for 30 years. Surviving are one sister, Barbara, and one brother, Robert, both of Milwaukee. She was preceded in death by her parents.”

Walter A. Wrase, - DeLAND, Fla: 81, formerly of LaPorte, died Saturday (Aug. 15, 1998) at his daughter's home in San Jose, Calif. A graveside service is at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte, with Pastor Joan Haney officiating. Cremation has taken place. Mr. Wrase was born June 9, 1917, in LaPorte, to Walter and Mrytle Hull Wrase. On Jan. 9, 1936, he married Thelma Craft, who preceded him in death in 1995. Survivors include one daughter, Lynda Stuart, San Jose; one son, Michael Wrase, DeLand; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Florence McCampbell, Lancaster, Calif., and Florence Wrase, South Bend. One brother, Richard Wrase, preceded him in death. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Zach, Amelia - 10 Jan 1950 Pg 2 col. 2 LaPorte Herald Argus Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Giese and kimball memorial home for Mrs. Amelia L. Zach, 63, of 1507 Lincoln Way, who died yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ben Parker. Mrs. Zach had been an invalid for the past 12 years. The Rev. Vicot rp. Frohme will offic with bur in Pine Lake cemetery. Friends may call at the Giese and Kimball home from this evening until services. Mrs. Zach was born in Laporte on June 25, 1866, the daughter of John & Dorothea Martinsen Pufpaff. Mrs. Zach, the widow of William F. Zach whom she married in 1888 was a membe rof the St. Paul's Evan. and Ref. church and the Pythian Sisters. The only survivors are her daughter, Mrs. Parker, seven grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Her husband, the son, two sisters and two brothers proceded her in death.

The daughter of August & Augusta Wildt, she was bprm in Union Township, this county and had lived in LaPorte County all her life. On Oct 13, 1887 at Tracy she was married to John C. Zach. She was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical church, American Legion Auxo;aru of Hamon Gray post and a Gold Star mother. Surv. are 4 daughters; Mrs. Elsie Minges of So. Bend; Mrs. Sylvia Biggs and Mrs. Edith Wedow both of LaPorte and Mrs. Edna L. Meinke of Oakland, California; three brothers, Charles G. Wildt of Veedersburg IN; William C. Wildt of LaPorte; and John C. Wildt of Chicago; four sisters, Mrs. Anna Kewley, Mrs. Laura miller and Mrs. Madeline Miller all of Laporte an Mrs. Carrie Roher of Lindsey, Cal; 12 grandchildren. Zach, Herbert - The funeral of Herbert F. Zach was held yesterday afternoon from the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Zach, 1318 Second Street, was one of thelarge held in the city for some time. There were many beautiful floral pieces. The pallbearers were A.E. Homann, T.W. Witters, A.J. Biehl, R.S. Rittenhouse, L.W. Eggebrecht and Sofus Hanson all members of the Moose Lodge of which Mr. Zach was a member. The lodge gave its ritualistic exercises at the grave and a firing squad from the American Legion fired a volley and taps were sounded. Mr. Zach was a Legion member. Among those from out of the city who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Richard Kyle of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. William Schmidt, Mr. amd Mrs. Barhardt Marschka, Mr. and Mrs. William Singbush, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Marschka, Charles and Otto Marschka, Charles Gale and family, Mrs. Cornelia Puffpaff and daughter and Mr. and Mrs. O.D. Hitt, all of Michigan City; and William Krueger of Mishawaka.
  #2. Paper unknown??? Herbert Fredrick Zach, 1117 First Street, died at the Holy Family Hospital at 4:55 a.m. today. Mr. Zach was 33 years old and had been ill for two weeks. He was born in LaPorte on April 28, 1891, and had lived here all his life. He was a foreman at the Advance-Rumely company. Helen N. Marschke became the wife of Mr. Zach on November 26, 1919. She survives with a daughter, Marjorie, 11 and a son William, 3, both at home. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Zach of LaPorte, and one sister, Mrs. Benjamin Parker also survive.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. John Zach, he was born in LaPorte on June 28, 1862 and had lived here all his life. On October 13, 1887 at Tracy he married Emma Wildt. He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Church. Surviving are his widow; four daughters, Mrs. Lawrence C. Wedow, Mrs. George A. Biggs, both of LaPorte, Mrs. William Minges of South Bend, and Mrs. E.L. Meinke of Oakland, California; 12 grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Louis Baker and Mrs. Augusta Barlag of LaPorte. Two sons, Howard and Earl, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at the home at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon. The Rev. Victor P. Frohne will officiate and burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery with O. M. Haverstock in charge. Zach, William F. - Obituary from the LaPorte Daily Herald-Argus, Thursday February 22, 1934. William F. Zach, 69, of 1318 Second Street, died at 8:35 this morning at his home after an illness of two months. He was born in LaPorte October 10, 1864, and resided here all of his life. On May 31, 1888 he was united in marriage in LaPorte to Amelia Puffpaff, who survives him. He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Church and the Knights of Pythias here. He is survived by his widow; one daughter, Mrs. Ben Parker, Sr. of LaPorte; two sisters, Mrs. Louise Baker and Mrs. Augusta Barlag, of LaPorte; one brother, John Zach of LaPorte; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services will be held at the residence Monday at 2:30, the Rev. Victor P. Frohne officiating. The remains may be viewed at the residence Sunday afternoon and evening. Mr Zach was president of the St. Paul's board for 17 years. The Knights of Pythias will have charge of services at the grave.
