Bachert, Willow E 9/24/1999 - News Dispatch, Michigan City, IN - - - LaPORTE — Willow E. Bachert, 82, LaPorte, died at 8 a.m. Wednesday (Sept. 22, 1999) at her home. A graveside service is at 10 a.m. Saturday at Springville Cemetery, Springville, Ind., with Pastor Andrew Bailey officiating. Burial is in Springville Cemetery. Visitation is for family only. Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, is handling the arrangements. Mrs. Bachert was born in Springville on Sept. 14, 1917, to Ernest and Freda Peo Wagner. On Nov. 25, 1961, in LaPorte, she married John E. Bachert, who died Jan. 20, 1989. Survivors include one son, Rick Slater, LaPorte; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Joy Slater, Springville; three sisters, Leona Carnini, Crown Point, Hazel Istatt, LaPorte, and Marie Montgomery, Florida, and several nieces and nephews. One son, Ronald Slater; three sisters and two brothers preceded her in death. Mrs. Bachert was a waitress at Mary’s Restaurant.

Dorothy Burns - 2/4/2000 - Michigan City, News Dispatch --- LaPORTE — Dorothy Mae Burns, 81, LaPorte, died at 2:40 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2000) at her daughter’s home. The funeral is at 11 a.m. Saturday at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, with Pastor Wayne Rosson officiating. Burial is in Springville Cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 7 p.m. today and 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Mrs. Burns was born April 24, 1918, in New Troy, Mich., to Ernest and Jennie Hatfield Spears. On Nov. 22, 1939, in LaPorte, she married Frank Burns, who preceded her in death. Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Friedrich, LaPorte, and M. Diana Davis, Michigan City; one son, Norman A. Burns, LaPorte; 10 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Myrtle Kruger and Ermal Wilson; a son-in-law, Harley Davis; and one brother, Vernon Spears. Mrs. Burns retired from Thanhardt Burger as a fabric worker and worked at Designs and Cakes of Michigan City.

Mildred Costello - 12/27/2001 - Michigan City, News Dispatch - -NEW Carlisle — Mildred A. Costello, 87, New Carlisle, died at 12:12 a.m. Monday (Dec. 24, 2001) at Hamilton Grove, New Carlisle. The service will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte. Burial will be in Springville Cemetery. Visitation is from 9 a.m. Friday until the service at the funeral home. Mrs. Costello was born July 15, 1914, in LaPorte, to Charles Wheatbrook Sr. and Eliza Jane (McNeal) Wheatbrook. On May 27, 1932, in LaPorte, she married Raymond Marquart, who died May 6, 1979. On Oct. 18, 1980, in LaPorte, she married Kenneth Costello who died Jan. 5, 1990. Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn Buerger, LaPorte; one son, John R. Marquart, South Holland, Ill.; four grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; and one brother, Charles Wheatbrook Jr., Rolling Prairie. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Elaine Marek; four sisters, Lottie Dunham, Gladys Fack, Ruth Geisinger and Evelyn Ray; and one brother, Randall Wheatbrook. Mrs. Costello had been a custodian at T.P. Laboratories. She was a member of Springville Free Methodist Church and was an active member of the Pine Lake Grange. Memorials may be made to Springville Free Methodist Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Clarence Crittendon - 1/11/2002 - Michigan City, News Dispatch - -Clarence T. Crittendon, 74, Michigan City, died at 10:55 a.m. Wednesday (Jan. 9, 2002) at his residence. The funeral is at 11 a.m. Saturday at Carlisle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Wayne Rossen officiating. Burial is in Springville Cemetery with military rites rendered. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. John Franklin Miller American Legion Post will have a memorial at 7 tonight at the funeral home. Mr. Crittendon was born Sept. 14, 1927, in Elgin, Ill., to Osborne Crittendon. On Nov. 17, 1978, he married Geneva Johnson. She survives. Also surviving are a stepson, Jessie Holliday, Michigan City; a daughter, Teresa (Robert Lamphiear) Crittendon, Michigan City; three stepdaughters, Rachael Foster, Annie Kay Holliday and Gloria Ann Holliday, all of Michigan City; and a grandson, Dakota Allen Lamphiear. Mr. Crittendon was an aviation mechanic with the rank of master sergeant with the U.S. Air Force, and worked for 10 years at Hayes Republic after retiring from the Air Force. He was a member of John Franklin Miller American Legion Post 37, and attended Purdue University in the later 1990s. Memorial contributions may be made to National City Bank in care of the Crittendon family.

Ewald, Peter Christian - Peter Christian Ewald was born in Germany, February 14, 1825, and came to this country in 1854. In 1862 he was married to Martha Elizabeth Ginder, nine children being born to them, five sons and four daughters. He departed this life May 8, 1894 aged 69 years, 2 months and 22 days. All but one of the children was at home. Mr. Delcamp preached the funeral sermon, assisted by Mr. Mathews. Burial at Springville. (Source: LaPorte Daily Herald, Monday May 14, 1894).

2nd Pneumonia Death In LaPorte Family. A second death in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Freese, 202 Worden street, as a result of pneumonia following the flu occurred this morning at 4:55 when their 2-year-old-son, Charles Raymond passed away at the Holy Family hospital. His nine-months-old brother, Robert Lee, died on Christmas Day of pneumonia. Charles was born in LaPorte on November 17, 1941. Surviving are his parents, one brother, Jesse William, two sisters, Darlene Mae and Delores Mary, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Wiltfong, Springville. Funeral service will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Haverstock chapel with the Rev. Orie L. Robinson of the Assembly of God church officiating. Burial will be in Springville cemetery. Friends may call from noon tomorrow until time of funeral at the chapel.

Freese, Roberta Lee - Obituary in the LaPorte Herald Argus December 27, 1943. Roberta Lee Freese, nine-months-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Freese of 202 Warden Street, died at his home Saturday morning at 10:30 following an illness of two weeks. He was born in LaPorte on March 14, 1943. Surviving are his parents, two brothers, Jesse W., and Charles R. both at home; two sisters, Dolores Mary and Darlene Mae, at home; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Wiltfong, Springville. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Haverstock chapel with the Rev. Robertson officiating. Burial will be in Springville. Freese, Norman Edward - Obituary in the LaPorte Herald Argus November 4, 1944. Norman Edward Freese, 6-months-old, son of Jesse and Mary Freese of 202 Warden Street died at 1:25 yesterday afternoon at the Fairview hospital. He was born in LaPorte on May 1. Surviving besides his parents are one brother, Jesse, Jr., two sisters, Delores May and Darlene Mae, at home, the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Wiltfong, Springville. Two brothers preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Monday Morning at 10:30 at the Haverstock chapel with the Rev. Orie Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Springville cemetery. Friends may call tonight at the chapel and until time of funeral. He’s buried in Springville.

Freese, Jesse W. - Obituary in the LaPorte Herald Argus May 14, 2003. A graveside service for Mr. Jesse W. Freese, 64, of 1116 Indiana Ave., LaPorte, will be Friday at 11 am at Springville Cemetery. He died Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at 1:42 p.m. at his home. There will be no visitation. Haverstock Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was born Nov. 5, 1938 in LaPorte to Jesse M. and Mary (Wiltfong) Freese and had live all his life in the LaPorte area. Mr. Freese was a millwright at Kingsly Furniture. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and a life member of both Moose Lode 492 LaPorte, and Bass Masters. Surviving are his mother of LaPorte; three sons, Jack, Jason, and Justin, all of LaPorte, nine grandchildren; and four sisters, Denise Euler, Donna Hall, Debbie Lain, and Darlene Wawok, all of LaPorte. He was preceded in death by his father, one sister, and three brothers.

Jesse Freese - 5/9/02 - Michigan City, News Dispatch - LaPORTE — Jesse M. Freese, 91, LaPorte, died at 12:31 p.m. Tuesday (May 7, 2002) at LaPorte Hospital. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Haverstock Funeral Home. Burial will be in Springville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. until the service Friday. He was born June 14, 1910, in Knox, Ind., to Lawrence and Martha (Hay) Freese. On Jan. 8, 1938, in LaPorte, he married Mary E. Wiltfong, who survives. Survivors also include four daughters, Denise Euler, Donna Hall, Debbie Lain, and Darlene Wawok, all of LaPorte; one son, Jesse Freese Jr., LaPorte; 17 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren. Mr. Freese was an inspector for Modine Manufacturing. He retired in 1975 after 40 years of service. Mr. Freese attended the LaPorte Assembly of God Church.

Kurt Friedrich Sr. - 10/5/02 - in News Dispatch, Michigan City, IN - LaPORTE - Kurt H. Friedrich Sr., 61, LaPorte, died Thursday, (Oct. 3, 2002) at Cooper County Hospital in Boonville, Mo. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cutler Funeral Home with Pastor Wayne Rosson officiating. Burial will be in Springville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. He was born Sept. 7, 1941, in LaPorte, to Manfred and Ema (Grunwald) Friedrich. On Feb. 27, 1988, in LaPorte, he married Carolyn S. Burns who survives. Survivors also include four sons, Timothy (Annette) McFarland, LaPorte, Kurt (Penny) Friedrich, Michigan City, Karl (Theresa) Friedrich, Snellville, Ga., and Jerry (Jaime) Burns, LaPorte; one daughter, Patricia (Robert) Griffin, El Paso, Texas; ten grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Manfred (Eunice) Friedrich, N.C., and Paul Friedrich, LaPorte; two sisters, Margarete (Ernest) Schwenk, LaPorte and Ruth (Dave) Erne, California; and nephews and nieces. Mr. Friedrich worked in the heating and air conditioning business for 35 years, and he owned Kurt Inc. Heating & Air Conditioning for five years. He was a professional wrestler in his younger days, and enjoyed bowling and bird watching. Mr. Friedrich also enjoyed watching stock car and NASCAR Racing. He never knew a stranger and loved his family

William Gambill - 9/20/01 Michigan City News Dispatch - ROLLING PRAIRIE — William J. Gambill, 73, Rolling Prairie, died at 6 a.m. Monday (Sept. 17, 2001) at his home. He was an area resident for 40 years. The graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Springville Cemetery, LaPorte. Cremation will take place. There will be no visitation. Haverstock Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was born Feb. 29, 1928, in Sullivan, Ind., to Charles A. and Ethel (Louellin) Gambill. Survivors include one daughter, Susan (Michael) Arvay, LaPorte; two sisters, Norma (Lawrence) Mick, Portage, Ind., and Virginia Crabill, Terre Haute, Ind.; one brother, Walter (Tony) Jack Gambill, Michigan City; sister-in-law Pauline Gambill, Phoenix, Ariz.; companion Lou Rice, New Carlisle, Ind.; two grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren. Also preceding Mr. Gambill in death were two sisters, Margaret Tryon and Ruth Bennett; and three brothers, Levi Gambill, Paul Gambill, and Harry Gambill. Mr. Gambill worked as an electrician for the Indiana Toll Road, retiring after 21 years. He was a World War II Veteran, serving in the Air Force. Mr. Gambill was a life member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post 9423 of Rolling Prairie, and the VFW of Michigan City. He was also a life member of the American Legion and of VFW National Homes. FRANK R. GRISWOLD - OBITUARY - 12-11-1944 Funeral services for Frank R. Griswold, 91, who died at 12:15 a.m. Saturday at the home of his son, Irving Griswold, route 1, La Porte, were held this afternoon and at the grave in Springville cemetery, the Rev. W. Vander Linden officiating. He was born in Vevay, Ind., on October 21, 1853, the son of Leonard and Sarah Helen Griswold. Others surviving are: 5 grandchildren. His wife, one son, one daughter, and one grandson preceeded him in death, the latter in a Japanese prison camp. O. M. Haverstock was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Dorothy Hutchinson - 5/19/1997 in News Dispatch, Michigan City, IN - SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP - Dorothy A. Hutchinson, 87, of Springfield Township, died at 8:22 a.m. Wednesday (May 7, 1997) in Lenox, Mich. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with Capt. Richard McDonald officiating. Burial will be in Springville Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday and until the time of service Monday at the funeral home. Mrs. Hutchinson was born June 1, 1909, in LaPorte, the daughter of Harry W. and Ada Bessie Euler Reed. On Oct. 23, 1926, in Michigan City, she married Edward Hutchinson, who preceded her in death on Aug. 11, 1990. Surviving are two sons, Dan and Frank Hutchinson, both of Michigan City; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. A son, Harold Hutchinson, two grandchildren, and two brothers, all preceded her in death. Mrs. Hutchinson was a homemaker and was a member of the Salvation Army Golden Agers of LaPorte. Naomi Lain- News Dispatch, Michigan City, IN 8/5/2000 - WESTVILLE — Naomi Lain, 78, Westville, died at 7:25 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 1, 2000) at Michigan City Health Care Center. She was a lifelong resident of LaPorte County. A graveside service will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Springville Cemetery, LaPorte. Cremation will take place. There will be no visitation. Mrs. Lain was born May 5, 1922, in LaPorte, to Edward and Marie Benson Krueger. On Nov. 21, 1939, in LaPorte, she married Robert Lain, who preceded her in death May 22, 1970. Survivors include three daughters, Judy Freeman and Patricia Pergler, both of Westville, and Connie Wheatbrook, Kingsbury; two brothers, Gordon Krueger, Mill Creek, and Phillip Krueger, LaPorte; 12 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Preceding Mrs. Lain in death were one daughter, Bonnie McCalran; one son, David Lain; three sisters; and five brothers. Mrs. Lain retired after 16 years as a baker at Bonnie Bakery.

Arlene Lidgard - 1/30/2001 - News Dispatch, Michigan City, IN LaPORTE — Arlene Lidgard, 88, LaPorte, died at 1:53 a.m. Monday (Jan. 29, 2001) at LaPorte Hospital. The funeral is at 1 p.m. Thursday at Essling Funeral Home, with the Rev. Andy Martin officiating. Burial is in Springville Cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mrs. Lidgard was born Dec. 2, 1912, in Medaryville, Ind., to Dewitt and Rose Stump Hazlett. On April 15, 1933, in Medaryville, she married Dale L. Lidgard, who preceded her in death. Survivors include one daughter, Doris Towle, LaPorte; one son, Richard Lidgard, LaPorte; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Hazlett. Mrs. Lidgard was a homemaker and former reporter for the newspaper in Winamac, Ind. Alice Levine - LaPORTE - 8/29/1999 - News Dispatch, Michigan City, IN   Alice Irene Levine, 64, LaPorte, died at 10:30 a.m. Thursday (Aug. 26, 1999) at LaPorte Hospital. The funeral was at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. George Helmuth officiating. Burial was in Springville Cemetery. She was born Nov. 9, 1934, in Rosebud, Mo., to George K. and Bessie Irene Morgan Thomas. Ms. Levine is survived by four sons, David Levine, Hamlet, Ind.; and Ronald, Thomas and Daniel (Mary) Levine, LaPorte; four brothers, Prentice McKenzie, LaPorte, Lee (Ramona) McKenzie, Bland, Mo., Tom and John E. Thomas, Rosebud, Mo.; four sisters, Viola Stam, South Bend, Georgia (Arthur) Stam, Bridgeview, Ill., Kathryn Cracauer, Pharr, Texas, Gloria Nilges, Springfield, Mo., and many nieces and nephews. A sister, Alleen Lee, and two brothers, Gussie Thomas and John McKenzie, preceded her in death. Ms. Levine had lived and worked in Chicago and South Bend before relocating in LaPorte. She was a loving, devoted mother, grandmother, sister and aunt to her many nieces and nephews. Devyn Menke - 7/18/2001 News Dispatch, Michigan City, IN - Devyn C. Menke, 32, Michigan City, died at 6 p.m. Monday (July 16, 2001) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Springville Free Methodist Church with the Rev. David Hill officiating. Cremation is taking place and there will be no service or visitation. Carlisle funeral home is handling arrangements. He was born Oct. 4, 1968, in Michigan City to Richard C. and Sharon (Schudorick) Menke, who survive. On Sept. 6, 1992, in LaPorte, he married Cheryl Weaver, who survives. Survivors also include one stepson, Jeff Irk, LaPorte; two stepdaughters, Chevin (Jason) Carter, Jacksonville, N.C., and Samantha Irk, Michigan City; one brother, Rick (Lisa) Menke, Michigan City; one sister, Laura (John) Glinos, LaPorte; one grandson, Anthony Carter, Jacksonville, N.C.; three nephews and one niece. Mr. Menke was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Leona and Willard Schudorick; and paternal grandparents, Orrie and Mabel Menke. Mr. Menke was self employed. He was a devoted fisherman. Miller, Conrad -   The La Porte Daily Argus, La Porte, Indiana, Tuesday, November 7, 1916: - Conrad Miller, aged 67, a farmer, died at the county asylum this morning at 6:30 o'clock. Mr. Miller's residence had been at Shippeburg. He was taken to the county asylum but a few days ago. He had been ill two weeks. He is survived by a widow, who still lives at Shippeburg. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Springville church, and burial will be made in the Springville cemetery, Decker Bros. in charge.
  The Daily Herald, La Porte, Tuesday, November 7, 1916 - Conrad Miller who lived on a small farm near Shippeeburg, and who was taken to the county asylum a week ago last Monday, died at that institution at 4 o'clock this morning. Death was caused by dropsy. He was 67 years of age and had been critically ill about two weeks. The deceased was born in Germany and had lived in this country since he was a young man. He leaves no relatives except a wife, Mrs. Sophia Miller. The funeral will be held at the Springville church at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon and the services will be conducted by the Springville Methodist minister. Interment will be in Springville cemetery. L.A. Decker & Bro. are in charge. (No tombstone for Conrad or his wife Sophia.)

Miller, Sophie - La Porte Argus, November 27, 1916: Mrs. Sophie Miller - After but a short illness of bronchial trouble and arterio sclerosis, Mrs. Sophie Miller, widow of Conrad Miller, formerly of Shippeeburg, died last night about midnight t the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Clayton Eaton, near Union Mills. The deceased's husband died two weeks ago last Wednesday. Mrs. Miller was born at Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, September 22, 1828, therefore was 90 years of age. She was married to Conrad Miller 40 years ago, since which time she had made her home in Shippeeburg until the death of her husband. She is survived by five grandchildren and one son, the latter by a former marriage. The funeral will probably be held Wednesday afternoon at Springville church. Burial in Springville cemetery, but the exact time for the services has not been announced. L.A. Decker and brother will be in charge.
  The Daily Herald, La Porte, Indiana, Monday, November 27, 1916 - Mrs. Sophie Miller, after a long and useful life of 88 years, passed away at about midnight last night at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Clayton Eaton, near Union Mills. Mrs. Miller was the wife of Conrad Miller of Shippeeburg and for many years had lived there on a farm and was well known and greatly respected in the Shippeeburg neighborhood. Mr. Miller died on November 8th last after which Mrs. Miller went to live with her granddaughter. Bronchial trouble was given as the cause of death, complicated with arterio-sclerosis. Mrs. Miller was born at Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, September 22, 1828. She came t this county about 40 years ago and was married here shortly after to Mr. Miller. She leaves one son by a former marriage, who does not live in this locality, and five grandchildren. The funeral will be held Wednesday at the church in Springville, near her old home and th e interment will be in the Springville cemetery. The hour of the funeral will be announced later. L.A. Rose Nace - 2/16/2001 - News Dispatch - LaPORTE — Rose J. Nace, 80, LaPorte, died at 7:26 a.m. Wednesday (Feb. 14, 2001) at her home. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church of LaPorte with the Rev. Doug Hadley officiating. Burial will be in Springville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Essling Funeral Home and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. She was born March 29, 1920, in Chicago to Michael and Rosa Glatzl Rossner. On Aug. 1, 1936, in Crown Point, Ind., she married LeRoy Nace Sr., who preceded her in death. Mrs. Nace is survived by three daughters, Jeanine Gropp, New Buffalo, Mich., Marceil Hicks and Darlene Nace, both of LaPorte; one son, LeRoy Nace Jr., West Palm Beach, Fla.; 18 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mitzi Seminara, Chicago; and several nieces and nephews. Albert Peo - July 5, 1956 Albert Peo, 71, R.R. 1, Box 213, died at his home at 8:45 p.m. yesterday (July 4, 1956). He had been in failing health for the past three years. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Springville Free Methodist Church with the Rev. Paul Donoghue officiating. Burial will be in Springville Cemetery. Friends may call at the Hummer-White Mortuary tomorrow evening and Saturday until 10:30 a.m., when the body will be taken to the church where it may be viewed until the hour of the service. Mr. Peo was born March 12, 1885, in Michigan City, the son of William and Marie Prussing Peo. On Feb. 26, (1893?) (clipping hard to read) in Springfield Twp., he was married to Laura Hileman, who preceded him in death. Surviving are two sons -- Robert and Gerald, both of this city; five daughters -- Mrs. Blanche Donoghue, Mrs. Mabel Wallis, Mrs. Gertrude Swiger, Mrs. Joyce Watts and Mrs. Lesley Dingman, all of this city; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Mrs. Harvey Hileman, this city; two brothers -- Charles and Louis, both of this city, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Hileman attended the Springville Free Methodist Church.

Carl Rogers - 2-16-2001 - News Dispatch Michigan City, IN - LaPORTE — Carl T. Rogers, 83, died at 6:15 p.m. Monday (Feb. 19, 2001) at LaPorte Hospital. A private family service will be held at a later date. Cremation will take place, and burial of ashes will be in Springville Cemetery, LaPorte. There will be no visitation. Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Rogers was born July 4, 1917, in Franklin, Tenn., to Paul and Gertrude Hiche Rogers. On Aug. 19, 1973, in Crown Point, Ind., he married Lois Marshall, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Patsy Rogers and Judy Rogers, both of Nashville, Tenn., and Brenda Rogers, Michigan City; a son, Carl T. Rogers, Henager, Ala.; three stepsons, Ronald Atteberry, Hebron, Ind., Thomas Atteberry, Bullhead, Ariz., and Donald Atteberry, Branchland, W. Va.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers. Mr. Rogers had been a LaPorte resident since 1960, coming from Crown Point. He was a laborer, working out of Iron Workers Local 395 in Hammond. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Hammond, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Karen Schaffer - News Dispatch 7-14-1999 - THE PINES — Karen P. Schaffer, 62, The Pines, died unexpectedly at 5:58 a.m. Tuesday (July 13, 1999) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Carlisle Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Benevides officiating. Burial will be in Springville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mrs. Schaffer was born March 8, 1937, in Michigan City to Stanley and Viola Urban Nespo. On Feb. 19, 1955, in Quartzsite, Ariz., she married Charles Schaffer. He survives. Also surviving are two sons, Michael (Laura) Schaffer, Hanna, Ind., and Rob (Marianne) Schaffer, Michigan City; two daughters, Jill (Rob) Saylor, LaPorte, and Abby (Paul) Benevides, Callo, Va.; and seven grandchildren. Mrs. Schaffer was a homemaker. She enjoyed bowling and golf and was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.

Schumaker, 96, LaPorte, died at 7:15 p.m. Sunday (Nov. 19, 2000) at Fountainview Terrace Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. The funeral is at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. David Schoop officiating. Burial is in Springville Cemetery. There is no visitation. Mrs. Schumaker was born Jan. 24, 1904, in Michigan City to Otto and Henrietta Wendt Voss. In 1923, she married Harold L. Schumaker. He died April 28, 1981. Survivors include one daughter, Frances (Irwin) Mellenthin, LaPorte; one son, Eugene (Kathryn) Schumaker, Seffner, Fla.; one brother, Otto (Mary) Voss, LaPorte; two sisters, Dorothy Gropp and Harriet Lobsiger, both of LaPorte; eight grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and Robert Voss; one sister, Madeline Brickley; and two infant sons. Mrs. Schumaker was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, LaPorte. Mr. Slater was born on Feb. 18, 1934, in LaPorte, son of John W. and Bernice E. Parent Slater. Surviving are three sisters, Dorothy Slater and Phyllis Cowgill, both of LaPorte, and Patricia Van Schoyck, Mill Creek; a brother, Donald Slater, LaPorte; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Slater was employed as a grocery store helper. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Sprague, 41 of 800 Michigan Ave., LaPorte died Saturday, January 17, at 9:40 am at LaPorte Hospital following an illness of two weeks. She was born October 25, 1939 in LaPorte, to Jesse and Mary (Wiltfong) Freese and had lived here all her life. On January 28, 1980, in LaPorte, she married Carl M. Sprague who survives. Surviving are three sons William W., Clarence E. and Henry G. all of LaPorte, f our daughters, Mrs. Mary Freese, and Bessie Stevens, LaPorte, Mrs. Frona Willis, Michigan City, and Mrs. Ruth Mitch, Carlisle, Iowa; 36 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren. Wiltfong, Clarence E. - Obituary in the LaPorte Herald Argus August 24, 1982. Clarence E. Wiltfong, 59, of 3061E CR-300S., LaPorte, died Monday August 23 at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana following an illness of eight weeks. He was born August 26, 1922, in LaPorte County, to Monroe and Lilly (Kimmel) Wiltfong and had lived here all his life. He was a member of FOP LaPorte, VFW Post 1130, American Legion Post 400, Fish Lake, Indiana, PNA 1120 and was a veteran of WWII. He was employed by Modine Mfg., Company and was a member of its 20-year Club. On September 26, 1948, in Valparaiso, he married Helen Paxton who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Dan (Esther) Jennele, of Pounding Mill, VA., and Dorothy, at home; four sons, Charles and David, both of Michigan City, Delbert of LaPorte, and Robert of North Liberty; seven granddaughters; two brothers, Wilson of LaPorte and Henry of Jamestown, NY; and four sisters, Mrs. Jesse (Mary) Freese and Mrs. Betsy Jane Stevens, both of LaPorte, Mrs. Don (Frona) Willis of Michigan City and Mrs. Ruth Mitch of Carlisle, Iowa. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Haverstock Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Taylor and Rev. Richard Blair officiating. Wiltfong, Herman Morris - Obituary in the Herald Argus March 31, 1926. Herman Morris Wiltfong, 13-months-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Wiltfong, residing one and a half miles from Springville, died at 2 o’clock this morning after an illness of one week. The child was born Feb. 18, 1925. He is survived by his parents, three brothers, Wilson, Henry, and Clarence; and one sister, Mary. His grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Kimmel of Mount Vernon, Ind., and Mrs. Betsy Wiltfong of LaPorte also survive. The funeral will be held at 2 o’clock Friday at the Springville church, the Rev. C. F. Cutler of Springville officiating. Burial will be in Springville Cemetery with E.E. Ebbert in charge.

Mrs. Lillie (Iverson) Wiltfong, 57, of Route 5 died at 8 o’clock yesterday morning at the Fairview hospital after an illness of two years. She was born April 13, 1896 in Booneville, Indiana. On March 30, 1913 she was married in Mount Vernon, Indiana to Charles M. Wiltfong, who survives. She lived in LaPorte County for the past 40 years. Besides her husband survivors are four daughter, Mrs. Jesse Freese and Mrs. Hughey Mitch Laporte. Mrs. Arthur Stevens and Mrs. Donald Willis, Kingsfrod Heights. Three sons William, Henry and Clarence, all of Laporte. two brothers, William Edwards, Evansville Indiana, and Lloyd Kimmel, Griffin Indiana and 21 grandchildren. Her mother SUSAN KIMMEL, and one sister proceeded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at Haverstock Chapel with Rev. James A. West officiating. Wiltfong, Sr., 83, of 1530 Sallwasser Dr., LaPorte will be Monday at 11 am at Haverstock Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Nye officiating. He died Thursday, March 12, 1998 at his home. He was born Sept. 15, 1914 in LaPorte County to Charles Monroe and Lillian (Kimmel) Wiltfong and lived in LaPorte all his life. Mr. Wiltfong was a US Army veteran of World War II, a member of Indiana and American Angus Associations, AARP and was a senior partner of 3-W Cattle Company. He was employed by LaPorte Schools from 1946 to 1959, then by South Bend Toy Company until he retired in 1977. He married Evelyn I. Schroeder May 11, 1946 who died May 14, 1980. Surviving are one daughter, Stella Naegele of LaPorte; three sons, William Jr. and Wendell both of LaPorte and Walter of Rolling Prairie; 14 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and four sisters; May Freese, Betsy J. Stevens, and Ruth Mitch all of LaPorte, and Frona Willis of Arizona. He was preceded in death by three sons, one grandson, his parents, and one brother.
